چکیده

     در طی صدسال گذشته، قدرت آمیزه‌ای از تاریخ و فلسفه علم (HPS) فراز و نشیب زیادی داشته است درحالیکه درطول این مدت چندین فرم بخود گرفته است و آثار مختلفی برجای گذاشته است. در دهه 1940 و دهه 1950 فیلسوفی بنام Gerd Buchdahl (گرد بوخدال) و همکارانش در ملبورن، استرالیا، نسخه برجسته روشمندی از HPS گردآوری کردند و در مطالعات خود با تاریخدانان عمومی، از آثار فلسفی R.G. Collingwood (ر.ج کالینگوود) و Ludwig Wittgenstein (لودویگ ویتگنشتاین) استفاده نمودند. بوخدال بعدها سعی کرد این مفهوم پیشگام را در دانشگاه کمبریج جستجو کند، او در آنجا سرپرستی یک مرکز جدید HPS را برعهده داشت. برای درک کیفیت و ابعاد مُد ابتکاری کندوکاو، درک اکولوژی اطلاعاتی که در یک جامعه مستعمراتی مهاجرنشین دوردست نمایان شده است ضرورت دارد، موقعیتی با بهره‌وری حاشیه‌ای که در آن، انجمنها و اتحادیه‌های پیش‌بینی نشده میتوانستند برای محققان مهاجری مثل بوخدال مجوز بگیرند. به همین منظور، این مقاله شجره‌نامه بفراموشی سپرده شدۀ روابط تاریخ و فلسفه و علم را نادیده میگیرد و بنابراین هویت شناختی گذشتۀ نادیده گرفته شدۀ HPS را افشا کرده و ابزاری برای تجسم مجدد آن در آینده پیشنهاد میدهد.

تئوری و روش در ملبورن
     گرد بوخدال که در یک خانواده یهودی مرفه در ماینز آلمان پس از جنگ جهانی اول پرورش یافته بود، مدرک مهندسی خود را دریافت کرد گرچه او اوقات فراغتش را به مطالعه آثار رنه دکارت، امانوئل کانت و سایر فلاسفه سپری کرده بود. در دوره تحصیلش در 1933 تصمیم گرفت با برادر جوانش Hans، یک نوجوان زیرک در فیزیک نظری، به انگلستان بگریزد. گرد در لندن بعنوان مهندس شهرساز مشغول کار شد درحالیکه هانس با دینگل در مرکز UCL به مطالعه نسبیت عام پرداخت . اما در 1940 این دو برادر همراه با سایر پناهنده‌های گریخته از آلمان نازی دستگیر شدند و با کشتی (Dunera) دونرا به استرالیا تبعید شدند. دو هزار تبعیدشده یا بیشتر بطورغیرمتتظره وقتی در سیدنی از کشتی پیاده میشدند در مسیر خود به یک اردوگاه پناهندگان در(Hay) های جایی دورافتاده در والز جنوبی جدید، و بعدها در مورد برادران بوخدال، به تاتورا در ویکتوریای شمالی، مورد استقبال قرار گرفتند.

     برادران بوخدال و سایرین در اینجا یک دانشگاه بومی تاسیس کردند و به تعلیم صدها فرد پناهنده مشابه پرداختند – “پسران کشتی دونرا” که با این نام شناخته میشدند – بعدها به رهبران اندیشمند استرالیا، امریکای شمالی و بریتانیا تبدیل شدند . در مدت یکی دوسال، هانس تدریس فیزیک در دانشگاه تاسمانیا را آغاز کرد و گرد بعنوان مهندس شهرساز در ملبورن شروع به کار کرد حتی وقتی درصدد بود با تعجیل در کلاسهای فلسفه دانشگاه ثبت نام کند.

     در دهه 1940 به باور یک ژورنالیست مارکسیست بنام گوت (1961، صفحه 32)، دانشگاه ملبورن همچنان محلی برای افراد ثروتمند محسوب میشد. انجمن مناظره و صنف کارگری که به دو حزب فابیان و کمونیست تقسیم شده بودند بسیار فعال بودند و یک کادر از دانشجویان متعلق به حزب کمونیست استرالیا بصورت توطئه‌آمیز (صفحه 24) با چند بلوک از پردیس دانشگاه دیدار کردند. شاعر کاتولیک شدیداً ضدکمونیستی و با افکار سیاسی مبهم بنام وینست باکلی (1983) اکثر تعالیم هنرهای آماتوری و دورازدسترس را پایه‌گذاری کرد و گردهمایی بدوی (صفحه 58) انجمنهای غالب فعالان چپگرا را محکوم نمود. باکلی بر این افسانه نوستالژیک اظهار تاسف کرد که ملبورن در دهه 1940 بستر داغ اندیشه سازنده پیشرونده کاوشگر بوده است. ولی درحقیقت اینطور نبود (صفحه 59). اما مرکز فلسفه، این دانشجوی جوان رشته ادبیات انگلیسی را شیفته خود ساخت. فلاسفه تحت رهبری یکسری از طرفداران کاریزماتیک ویتگنشتاین، در حرفه خود بصورت پیچیده و با پیچیدگی حرفه‌ای با نرمی گربه‌صفتانه و منفعت‌طلبی افراطی نمایان شدند (صفحه 58). از بین دانشجویان فلسفه، ثبات و قاطعیت افراد مجرب دونرا، کسانی مثل باکلی را تحت تاثیر قرار داده بودند.

چکیده

در نیمه دوم قرن نوزدهم، امپراطوری روم همواره یکی از بازیکنان کلیدی در شبکه های اوراسیا در نظر گرفته می شد. این تحقیق بر چهار هدف مربوطه متمرکز است. از دیدگاه تاریخ نگاری، بازسازی مسیرهای تجاری موضوع اصلی در تاریخ رابطه بین امپراطوری روم و خاورمیانه را نشان می دهد. با تصور تعدادی از برنامه های سفر و ترکیبی از مسیرهای زمینی و دریایی، ممکن است در یک حقیقت پیچیده تجدید نظر شود که در آن شبکه های اوراسیا در طول امپراطوری روم اولیه توسعه یافتند. تا آنجا که به اقتصاد مربوط می شود، مدارک جدیدی نمایانگر دامنه وسیع و تأثیر فوق العاده محصولات شرقی بر بازاهای روم است. تمرکز نهایی ما بر روی حل و بازسازی روند ابریشم چینی است که اثر مهمی بر این که چگونه تعاملات و مبادلات در شبکه های اوراسیا در طول قرن های نخست امپراطوری روم پیچیده بود و مطلقا یکنواخت نبود، دارد.

ما نمی توانیم رابطه تجاری بین روم و خاورمیانه را بدون در نظر گرفتن ابریشم، یکی از افسانه ای ترین کالاهای شبکه های اوراسیایی، به خوبی توصیف کنیم (Hildebrand, 2016: non vidi). اگر صحت داشته باشد که رومی ها تمایل به شناختن کالاها با مکان های اصلیشان داشتند (مثلا فلفل مربوط به هند است و …)، این شناخت مخصوصا درمورد چین نیز بدیهی است: کلمه لاتین سرس برای مشخص کردن مردم چینی بکار می رفت. کلمه مشابهی به عنوان یک صفت برای شناخت ابریشم استفاده می شد: “ابریشم” سریکوم، سریکا به معنای “پوشاک های ابریشمی” یا همچنین “از سرزمین سرس” بود. در نهایت واژه سریکوم که جمع واژه سریکی بود نیز نامی برای “تجار ابریشم” بود. این فقط شروع امپراطوری روم است که این ماده یک کالای لوکس همه جانبه شد (Thorley, 1971). به سختی انطباقی برای ابریشم مذکور در شعرهای مارتیال- شاعر رومی زندگی روزانه- که در پایان قرن اول میلادی صحبت هایی درمورد محصولات ابریشمی در روم، به عنوان بالش ها یا پارچه ها، برای انتقال تصویری از شیوه زندگی مرفه و سطح بالا کرد را می توان یافت.

Abstract

During the second half of the 19th century, the Roman Empire was already considered one of the key players inside the Eurasian networks. This research focuses on four relevant points. From a historiographical perspective, the reconstruction of the trading routes represented a central theme in the history of the relationship between the Roman Empire and the Far East. Imagining a plurality of itineraries and combinations of overland and sea routes, it is possible to reconstruct a complex reality in which the Eurasian networks during the Early Roman Empire developed. As far as economics is concerned, new documentation demonstrates the wide range and the extraordinary impact of the Eastern products on Roman markets. A final focus on the process of Chinese silk unravelling and reweaving provides an important clue on how complex and absolutely not mono-directional were the interactions and the exchanges in the Eurasian networks during the first centuries of the Roman Empire.

5- From China to Rome – from Rome to China: a short focus on Silk and Silk Roads

We cannot conceive describing the trade relationship between Rome and the Far East without considering silk, one of the most legendary goods of the Eurasian networks (Hildebrand, 2016: non vidi). If it is true that the Romans tended to identify goods with their supposed places of origin (for example pepper is associated with India, etc.), this identification is particularly evident in the case of China: the Latin word Seres used to designate the Chinese people. The same word was used as an adjective to identify the silk: sericum ‘silk’, serica meant ‘silk garments’ or also ‘from the land of the Seres’. Finally the word sericum in the plural form serici was also a noun for ‘merchants of silk’. It is only at the beginning of the Roman Empire that this material becomes a widespread luxury good (Thorley, 1971). Hardly a coincidence then to find silk mentioned in the poems of Martial –the poet of the Roman ‘daily life’– who, at the end of the 1st century CE, speaks of silk products in Rome, as such pillows or clothes, to convey an image of wealth and sophisticated lifestyle.

چکیده

در طول قرن اخیر، یکی از موضوعاتی که بحث های زیادی در رابطه با تاریخ شناسی دوره ی صفویه مرتبط با آن صورت گرفته است، منابع ایدئولوژیک تعصب و جانفشانی های قزلباش ها بود که منجر به قدرت رسیدن خاندان صفوی به حکومت ایران گشت. تا کنون، در رابطه با شخصیت شاه اسماعیل به عنوان تجسم قدرت الهی با ماموریتی برای نجات بخشی و رستگاری ، یک توافق نظر حدودی ایجاد شده است. در این مقاله ما به صورت نسبی این مفهوم سازی بسیار قدیمی را ، با بررسی ماموریتی که شیخ ها در دوره ی انقلابی برای خودشان مشخص کرده بودند و این ماموریت تا کنون به مورد چشم پوشی قرار گرفته بود ، به چالش می کشیم. این ماموریت، تمایل شیوخ برای انتقام جویی از خون ریخته ی حسین بود، ماموریتی که تنها شامل تجسم و به یادآوری مقوله ی صاحب الخروج یا « ارباب قیام» بود، یک نشانه شناسی قهرمانانه که از طریق یک مجموعه ی خاص از ادبیات حماسی کربلا ترویج داده شده بود. بر اساس این ایده که تعصب جامعه ی ترک زبان که ریشه های اصلی جنبش صفویه را ایجاد کرده بودند در اصل بر اساس ادبیات حماسی کربلا ایجاد شده بود، در این مقاله اعتقاد ما این است که شیخ جنید، شیخ حیدر و به خصوص شاه اسماعیل به صورت موفق توانستند برنامه ها و عقاید صوفی صفوی را تغییر دهند تا قالب یک مذهب عمومی را شکل بدهند که این مذهب از قبل وجود داشت و توسط صوفی گری و المان های شیعه گری تکمیل شد و حالتی محبوب از مذهب اسلامی را ایجاد کرد و بر همین اساس ما معتقد هستیم که « شیعه گری منجر به پالایش صوفی گری» گشت.

جمع بندی

از زمان ظهور امام گرایی منطقی – شرعی از اواخر قرن هشتم تا کنون، می توان از دو رشته ی شیعه گری متفاوت اما به هم مرتبط صحبت کرد : دین گرایی منطقی با نام امامی و شیعه گری غلو آمیز. مخالف با سکوت سنتی سیاسی در دسته ی اول، گروه دوم همیشه غرق در لفظ های سیاسی بوده اند. در جماعت غلات ، انتقام برای خون حسین همیشه یکی از عوامل تحریک اصلی برای فعالیت سیاسی بوده است که معمولا حالت یک انقلاب انتظار ظهور را به خودش گرفته است. در طول دوره ی پس از مغول، فرهنگ انتقام شدید کربلا و انتظار برای حکومت هزار ساله ی حق در میان شیعه های غلات به صورت صوفی گری عمومی نمود پیدا کرد. در زمان میانه ی قرن چهاردهم، اتصال این المان های شیعه گری غلات و صوفی گری منجر به شکل گیری نوع خاصی از اتحاد دینی شد که من آن را صوفی گری عمومی تحت تاثیر شیعه گری می نامم. این جنبش های صوفی – انتظاری که در قرن پانزدهم در ایران ایجاد شد مانند نور بخشی ها ، مشعشع ها ، و حتی سربداران که در قرن چهاردهم در خراسان به پا خواستند را می توان به عنوان نمایه ای از این مکتب خاص دانست. انقلاب صفویه ازین رو همراه با قزلباش ها ، نشان دهنده ی پرورش این پدیده ی پسا مغولی در دین گرایی اسلامی می باشد.

Abstract

Over the past century, one of the most heavily debated topics within Safavid historiography has been the ideological sources of the Qezelbash zeal that carried the Safavid dynasty to the throne of Persia. By now, a near-consensus has been formed about Shah Esmaʿil’s personality as an incarnation of the Godhead armed with a messianic mission of salvation. This article partly challenges this long-entrenched conceptualization by calling attention to a heretofore overlooked mission that the shaykhs of the revolutionary period set for themselves. This was their desire to avenge the spilling of Hosayn’s blood, a mission which was nothing but a reincarnation of the topos of sāheb al-khorūj or the “master of the uprising,” a heroic typology cultivated via a particular corpus of Karbala-oriented epic literature. Based on the idea that the religiosity of the Turkishspeaking milieu that constituted the Safavid movement’s grassroots was primarily shaped by this Karbala-oriented epic literature, this essay argues that Shaykh Jonayd, Shaykh Haydar, and especially Shah Esmāʿil successfully reformulated the Safavid Sufi program to address the codes of popular piety, which already existed, nurtured by Sufism and some Shiʿite elements, a particular mode of Islamic piety that I call “Shiʿiteinflected popular Sufism.”

Conclusion

Ever since the emergence of rational-juridical Imamism from the late eighth century onwards, it has been possible to speak of two different but interrelated strands of Shiʿism: rationalized-“orthodox” Imamism and suprarational gholāt Shiʿism. Contrary to the political quietism of the former, the latter has always been immersed in political aspirations. In the gholāt milieu, the revenge for Hosayn’s blood has always become the principal stimulus of political action, which usually assumed a mode of chiliastic revolution. During the post-Mongol era, the intense revenge culture of Karbala and the millenarian-messianic aspirations of the gholāt Shiʿism filtered into popular Sufism. By the mid-fourteenth century, the confluence of these gholāt Shiʿite elements and Sufism gave rise to a peculiar type of ‘Alid piety, which I call Shiʿite-inflected popular Sufism. The messianic-Sufi movements that appeared in fifteenth-century Iran such as the Nurbakhshiya (Bashir, 2003), the Mosha‘sha‘ (Bashir, 2001), and even the Sarbadār uprising in fourteenth-century Khorasan (Smith) should be regarded as manifestations of this particular piety. The Safavid revolution, hence the Qezelbash synthesis, stands for the culmination of this post-Mongol phenomenon of Islamic religiosity.

Iconic Transformations from Hinduism to Islamic Art

Abstract

The strategic location of the Malay Peninsula at the Straits of Malacca became the key attraction to the successful trade route between the East and the West. It became the meeting point for traders who not only brought their trades but also their religious belief system. Since the beginning of the Christian era, other religious culture such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam had arrived the shores of the Peninsula. The coming of Hinduism in 500 AD has brought an end to animist culture of the Malay people. Gradually Indian belief system became the embodiment of Malay art and culture not only in the form of literary Sanskrit words but also in carved wood and textiles to fulfi ll religious devotions and the daily utilitarian needs. Therefore, the objectives for this paper are (1) to investigate how Hindu worldview infl uences the form and content of its artistic element in selected fi eldwoodcarving and textiles, (2) to postulate the Malay-Islamic aesthetic principles derived from the Qur’an and hadith, and (3) to discuss the transformation from Hindu icons to Islamic worldview in art. The appropriate approaches that merged and integrated with the iconic elements of such transformations are determined. In addition, based from the key evolution factors of Hindu characteristics, several samples of iconic images were identifi ed and classifi ed. The samples presented justifi ed when Islam came to the Malay Peninsula in the fi fteenth century; it has brought Hinduism to an end. Indeed, through the whole Islamization process, Islam has transformed the body and soul of the Malay mind. It shaped both religious and spiritual vision of reality specifi cally in terms of artistic and cultural expressions.

1 Introduction

The Malay Peninsula’s position where three ocean worlds came together was the key attraction to the successful trade route between the Indian continent and the Far East. It became the meeting point for traders who not only brought along their trades but also their religious belief system. Since the beginning of the Christian era, various religious cultures such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam had arrived the shores of the Peninsula. According to an eminent Muslim scholar, Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas, the coming of Islam to the Malay world in the thirteenth century constitutes a momentous event that decisively shaped both the worldview and ethos of the Malay society [ 1 ]. Islam not only shaped the religious and spiritual vision of reality but also its artistic and cultural expressions of the Malays. Such infl uences were visible in various traditional forms including performance, literary, sound, and visual art. Specifi cally in traditional Malay art, the impact of Islamization of the Malay world has profoundly affected signifi cant change in the iconography, morphology, and their functions in the Malay society. However, the shift of worldview from Hindu Buddhism to Islam did not result in a drastic change especially in the manifestation of the Hindu traditional art forms due to the ingenuity of Sufi masters who were able to accommodate what was permissible in Islam that gradually dovetailed with the new faith [ 2 ].

The impact of Islamic tradition of the Malay woodcarving and textiles is still pervasive after more than fi ve decades when Malaysia gained her independence. Impressive woodcarving work adorned the interiors of grand palaces throughout the country. In the hands of traditional Malay woodcarver, it is the profound understanding and beliefs of the Malays’ aesthetic principles that exude in their elaborate expressions and confounding patterns and composition that astonish the viewers. It is here that the local genius of traditional Malay woodcarver as the artist observes and interprets the ambience that surrounds him [ 3 ]. As posited by scholars, the traditional Malay art forms are but the visual embodiment of the spiritual and moral- ethical values of the Malay society. Apart from their importance as everyday ceremonial utilitarian artifacts, they have numerous other functions as religious hangings, royal insignia, sacred talisman, and others for they are all interconnected with religious and political organizations, marriage, social status, and exchange purposes. As a corollary, it is only by seeing these art forms in their cultural context that we can understand their true value and meaning [ 4 ]. Thus, this paper attempts to discuss iconic transformation from Hinduism to Malay-Islamic art forms specifi cally in woodcarving and textiles. First, it will delve briefl y the historical background of these icons in the Malay Peninsula during the pre-Islamic period; this is to provide the background of such art forms before cultural transformation. Second, the coming of Islam and its worldview in art and culture of the Malay people will be elucidated. And third, this paper will postulate on the change and transformations of Hindu icons to accommodate the Islamic aesthetic principles.

مقدمه

تاریخ ایران قبل از قرن 19 ام ، از نظر عددی و یا از نظر حکومت هایی قابل اعتماد، دوره های کوتاهی میباشد. کمبود داده های کمی شاید مهم ترین مشکلی است که پیش روی تاریخ دانان برای بررسی اقتصادی و اجتماعی این دوره وجود دارد، و به ندرت میتوان اطلاعات کافی در مورد دوره ی صفوی نسبت به دوره های قبل از آن به دست آورد. آرشیو های اطلاعاتی در مورد دوره ی صفوی از بین رفته است و تاریخ پارسی اطلاعات کمی در این زمینه و حساب های اروپایی های ملاقات کننده در این دوره دارند، با وجود این که نظرات کلی در مورد موضوعات اقتصادی و اجتماعی معمولا از نظر داده های کمی، قابلیت اعتماد پایینی دارند. ازین رو دوره ی صفوی در ایران تضادی ناامید کننده در مقایسه با همسایه های غربی و شرقی اش دارد، زیرا در کشور های همسایه نفوذ اروپایی ها موجب شده است که گزارش های غنی از این کشور ها در آرشیو های اطلاعات اروپاییان وجود داشته باشد، در حالی که در کشور عثمانی، تنها چیزی که از این آرشیو های گسترده باقی مانده است، در مورد آسیب هایی است که از طرف کشور عثمانی به رقبای صفوی خودشان باقی مانده است.

جمع بندی
شاید تنها جمع بندی دقیق این است که تخمین های کمی بر اساس نویسنده های معاصر در دوره ی صفویه در تاریخ ارزش زیادی ندارد. اما داده های آماری موجود ، نشان میدهد که در صادرات خام ابریشم ایران به اروپا بین سال های 1500 و 1720 افزایش بسیار زیادی داشته است. نمیتوان این توسعه را با دقت کافی مشخص کرد، اما تنها میتوان گفت که تجارت های تخمین زده شده در حدود سال 1500 در حد چند ده هزار کیلوگرم میباشد، و سپس به 200.000 کیلوگرم و یا مقدار بیشتری تا قرن هفدهم رسیده است و سپس این مقدار نیز در سال های بعدی افزایش بسیاری داشته است و احتمالا تا قرن هجدهم به مقدار نیم میلیون کیلوگرم رسیده است.
وجود صادرات با رشد سریع در ابریشم خام در کل دوره ی صفویه، موجب میشود که سوال های جالبی در بعضی از موارد ایجاد شود : تجاری سازی تولید کشاورزی، تاثیر نیاز های خارجی برای موارد خام بر روی قیمت و تولید داخلی، سهم صادرات ابریشم بر روی اقتصاد به صورت کلی و شرایط مالی استان ها به صورت خاص، نقش اقتصادی افراد برجسته، و طبیعت و علل کاهش قدرت دوره ی صفویه ، اما ابعاد کمی بدون شک میتواند موجب تفکر ما شده و ازین رو مسیر های مختلف برای تحقیقات آینده را ایجاد کند.

Introduction

Pre-nineteenth century Iranian history is short on numbers, or at least on reliable ones. Lack of quantitative data is perhaps the greatest obstacle confronting historians of pre-modern Iranian economy and society, and the Safavid period is scarcely better provided than earlier ages. The Safavid archives were destroyed, the Persian histories provide few hard facts, and the accounts of visiting Europeans, though often full of comment on social and economic matters, are generally unreliable when it comes to quantitative information. Safavid Iran thus presents a depressing contrast to its neighbours to East and West, where the earlier and deeper European penetration has left arich record in the archives of several European countries, while in the case of the Ottoman Empire, the survival of extensive state archives can only remind the historian of Iran of how much was lost through the destruction of their Safavid counterparts.

Conclusion

Perhaps the only firm conclusion is that quantitative estimates by contemporary writers on Safavid Iran are of little worth to the historian. The available statistical evidence does, however, suggest a vigorous expansion in the export of Iranian raw silk to Europe between 1500 and 1720. It has not been possible to chart this expansion with any precision, only to say that from a trade measured in some tens of thousands of kilograms in around 1500, the export probably reached 200,000 kg or more by the turn of the seventeenth century, and was greatly in excess of this figure in the early eighteenth century, possibly attaining a level as high as half a million kilograms.

The existence of a fast-growing export trade in raw silk throughout the Safavid period raises interesting questions in a number of areas: the commercialization of agricultural production, the impact of foreign demand for raw materials on prices and on domestic manufacture, the contribution of the silk export trade to the economy as a whole and to state finances in particular, the economic role of the political elite, and the nature and causes of Safavid decline. These questions are beyond the scope of this article, but the quantitative aspect undoubtedly provides food for thought and suggests many avenues for future research.

چکیده

Abstract

What is at stake in the alteration of material structure of cultural objects from the paper forms of manuscript and print to the digital form of computer files? In particular, how is the change affecting academic disciplines which rely upon stable forms of symbolic records? More specifically still, how is the discipline of history affected by the digitization of writing? Is digitization simply a more efficient means of reproduction, storage and transmission of documents, whose availability in space and time is enhanced for the application by historians of research techniques and methods? Or does digitization cause an alteration for historians in the constitution of truth?

Disciplining the Discipline

In this messy situation, with so much in the humanities appearing up for grabs, uncertain and in turmoil, the ability of the discipline to respond to the challenge and opportunities of new media depend in part on how tightly the boundaries of the discipline are guarded, or how open historians are to new developments affecting their methods and assumptions. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the discipline of history shifted interest toward the social and the everyday, away from grand politics and intellectual history. Although many of these younger historians were Marxist in orientation, the empiricist epistemology that characterized political history changed very little in the shift to social history. Social historians, like their forebears, searched the record for con scious acts of agents (Poster, 1997,101).

History as Media History

The drastic novelties of digital culture suggest, at the very least, that the history of the media becomes a major topic for historians. This relatively harmless innovation in the epistemological repertoire of the discipline ought to incite far less resistance than some of the other suggestions offered in this paper. Students of media from other disciplines would benefit greatly from comparative historical work. Too many studies of the internet, for example, are flawed by a lack of perspective on the topic, becoming lost in the dazzling novelty of the new technology. Some important work has already been done on topics ranging from print (Johns, 1998), to the telegraph (Carey, 1989), photography, panoramas and other visual technologies of the nineteenth century (Crary, 1992, 345), the telephone (Fischer, 1992), film (Charney, 1995), radio (Douglas, 1987), television (Spigel, 1992) and others too numerous to mention. Not all these histories, it might be noted, are by historians.
