چکیده
در این مقاله عدم‌تعادل‌های ناشی از شکاف قیمت در بازار سهام ایالات متحده (متشکل از بازارهای داوجونز، اِس‌اَندپی500 و نزدک) که دوره 1928 تا 2018 را پوشش می‌دهد، تحلیل می شود. این مقاله با هدف بررسی اینکه آیا شکاف‌های قیمتی باعث ایجاد ناکارآمدی در بازار می‌شود یا خیر، تدوین شده است. شکاف قیمت زمانی رخ می‌دهد که قیمت بازگشایی روز جاری با سفارش بسته‌شده روز قبل از بازگشایی بازار متفاوت باشد. چندین فرضیه با استفاده از آزمون‌های مختلف آماری (Student’s t-test،ANOVA ، Mann-Whitney test)، تحلیل رگرسیون و روش‌های ویژه‌ای مانند بازده تجمعی اصلاح‌شده و رویکردهای شبیه‌سازی معاملات، آزمایش می‌شوند. ما شواهدی محکم در مورد حرکت غیرعادی قیمت سهم پس از شکاف قیمتی به‌وجود آمده پیدا می‌کنیم. مشاهده می‌کنیم که در طی یک روز شکاف قیمت‌ها در جهت شکاف ایجادشده تغییر می‌کنند. یک استراتژی معاملاتی مبتنی بر این ناهنجاری از این جهت کارآمد بود که نتایج آن تصادفی نبوده است و این‌که نشانگر کارآیی این بازار نیست. اثر حرکت موقت بود و هیچ شواهدی از فصلی‌بودن شکاف قیمت پیدا نشد. سرانجام اینکه، نتایج ما نیز برخلاف این تصور عامیانه بود که شکاف قیمت‌ها پر می‌شود.

طبق گفته فاما (1965، 1970) بازاري كه در آن تصميمات سرمايه‌گذاري با فرض اينكه قيمت‌هاي ضمني “به‌طور کامل” تمام اطلاعات موجود را منعكس مي‌كند، اتخاذ مي‌شود، مي‌تواند كارآمد تلقي شود. علاوه بر این، میزان انعکاس اطلاعات در قیمت اوراق بهادار را می‌توان به دو شکل مختلف طبقه‌بندی و آزمایش کرد، یعنی شکل ضعیف که فقط اطلاعات تاریخی بر اوراق بهادار تأثیر می‌گذارد و شکل قوی درجایی‌که یک سرمایه‌گذار اطلاعات خصوصی در مورد قیمت یک اوراق بهادار دارد. بنابراین ، EMH به سادگی این ادعا است که اطلاعات “به طور کامل” در قیمت‌های اوراق بهادار منعکس می‌شوند، یعنی هیچ سرمایه‌گذاری فرصتی برای سودآوری از طریق آربیتراژ ندارد.

چکیده
زمینه: تحقیقات در خصویص ارتباط بین مدت‌زمان خواب و بروز افسردگی نتایج متناقضی را نشان داده است.
روش ها: در این مطالعه بزرگسالانی مشارکت داشتند که در نظرسنجی ملی سلامت و تغذیه از سال 2009 تا 2016 شرکت کرده بودند. برای ارزیابی ارتباط بین مدت‌زمان خواب و افسردگی از رگرسیون لجستیک چند متغیره استفاده شد.

4 بحث

در این مطالعه مقطعیِ جمعیت محور مشخص شد که طول مدت خواب با افزایش خطر ابتلا به افسردگی مرتبط است. همچنین، یافته‌ها یک رابطه غیرخطی بین مدت‌زمان خواب و خطر افسردگی را نشان داد. این رابطه به شرح زیر مشخص شد: خطر ابتلا به افسردگی به‌طور قابل‌توجهی با افزایش مدت‌زمان خواب افزایش می‌یابد. مدت‌زمان خواب بهینه طی روزهای هفته برای کاهش خطر افسردگی 8 ساعت است. نه‌تنها خواب کوتاه، بلکه طولانی بودن مدت خواب نیز باعث افزایش ابتلا به افسردگی می‌شود.

Abstract

Background Evidence of an association between sleep duration and depression was inconsistent.

Methods Adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2009 to 2016 were included. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between sleep duration and depression.

Results Among the 25,962 participants (mean age 48.1 years; 49.2% male) in this study, 23,636 had a depression score <10 and 2,326 had a depression score ≥ 10. After adjustment for gender, age, race/ethnicity, education, marital status, and annual family income, BMI, alcohol status, and smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, work activity, and physical activity risk factors, participants who had short sleep duration had odds ratios (OR) of 1.86 (95% confidence interval 1.59, 2.17) and participants who had long sleep duration had OR of 1.49 (95% confidence interval 1.22, 1.83) for incident depression. Further analysis revealed a U-shaped association between sleep duration and incident depression. When sleep duration < 8 hours, increased sleep duration is associated with a significantly lower risk of incident depression (OR = 0.68 [95% CI 0.64, 0.71], P < 0.001). When sleep duration ≥ 8 hours, the risk of depression increased significantly with an increase in sleep duration (OR = 1.32 [95%CI 1.23, 1.41], P < 0.001). Conclusions Sleep duration were independently associated with a higher incident depression. Not only insufficient sleep but excessive sleep also increase the risk of depression.

4 Discussion

In this population-based cross study, sleep duration was found to be independent associated with an elevated risk of the incidence of depression. We further revealed a nonlinear relationship between sleep duration and risk of depression. The relationship was characterized as follows: the risk of developing depression increased significantly with an extreme sleep duration. The optimal sleep duration in weekdays to reduce the risk of depression was 8 hours. Not only short sleep duration, but long sleep duration would also increasing incidence of depression.

Abstract

Brand equity has played an important role in firms’ stock performance, especially during the stock market crash provoked by Covid-19. Our manuscript investigates how brand equity impacts stock performance during the Covid-19 crash. Firms with top brands should be a particularly attractive “safe harbor” in the crash to investors since consumer loyalty and demand advantages brought by brand equity enable firms to retain stable cash flows and mitigate the macroeconomic shock. Based on U.S. listed firms, we find that firms with top brands experience higher stock returns, lower systematic risk and lower idiosyncratic risk in the Covid-19 crash than other firms. Moreover, our findings are used to distinguish the brand equity effect from the corporate social responsibility (CSR) effect on stock performance during the Covid-19 crash.

1. Introduction

At the end of 2019, a new disease, Covid-19, broke out around the world. Covid-19 affected people’s health and caused a large number of deaths. Moreover, Covid-19 and the stay-at-home orders and lockdowns triggered by Covid-19 brought huge environmental uncertainty. Because of this epidemic, Erdem (2020) reveals that market indices of 75 countries dropped and Rizwan et al. (2020) find a significant increase in systemic risk for bank sector. In particular, from February 24 to March 23, 2020, the stock market experienced a dramatic crash in response to the Covid-19 outbreak. Over just 21 trading days, the Dow Jones Industrials dropped 33.5%, the Nasdaq Index dropped 25.6%, and the Standard & Poor’s (S&P) 500 Index lost 30.6%. We call this crash the Covid-19 crash, which provides a window to reappraise the value of brand equity in an uncertain environment. At the time of this writing, Covid-19 is still spreading worldwide. In the context of this epidemic, it is of great practical significance to study investors’ reaction to brand equity. Our paper explores the role of brand equity when firms face that epidemic, which is embodied in investigating the impact of brand equity on stock performance, such as stock returns, systematic risk and idiosyncratic risk.

4. Conclusion

In this paper, we focus on the impact of brand equity on stock performance during the Covid-19 crash. Our empirical results reveal that firms with top brands experience higher stock returns, lower systematic risk and lower idiosyncratic risk during the Covid-19 crash. Meanwhile, after excluding potential endogeneity concerns, our empirical results are robust. Moreover, our empirical result reveals that the influence of brand equity is independent rather than dependent on corporate social responsibility. Overall, our study provides evidence on the effect of brand equity on stock performance during the Covid-19 crash. First, it makes a contribution to the literature on Covid-19 and business strategy. Second, we extend the literature on the value of brand equity during stock crashes.

Abstract

Despite calls for political consensus, there is growing evidence that the public response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been politicized in the US. We examined the extent to which this polarization exists among the US public across two national studies. In a representative US sample (N = 699, March 2020) we find that liberals (compared to conservatives) perceive higher risk, place less trust in politicians to handle the pandemic, are more trusting of medical experts such as the WHO, and are more critical of the government response. We replicate these results in a second, pre-registered study (N = 1000; April 2020), and find that results are similar when considering partisanship, rather than political ideology. In both studies we also find evidence that political polarization extends beyond attitudes, with liberals consistently reporting engaging in a significantly greater number of health protective behaviors (e.g., wearing face masks) than conservatives. We discuss the possible drivers of polarization on COVID-19 attitudes and behaviors, and reiterate the need for fostering bipartisan consensus to effectively address and manage the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is not the one to use for politics. It’s like playing with fire… Please work across party lines, across ideology, across beliefs, across any differences for that matter. We need to behave. That’s how we can defeat this virus.

As countries around the world are designing policies and legislation to fight and contain a global pandemic, over half a million deaths have been recorded due to the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) with almost a quarter of those deaths occurring in the United States alone (CSSE, 2020). In the absence of a scalable vaccine or effective antiviral treatment, scholars have increasingly noted the important role of the social sciences in evaluating public opinion and the impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions (Van Bavel et al., 2020) such as mask wearing, social distancing, hand washing, and self-isolation. Crucially, the effectiveness of these interventions not only depends on an emerging scientific understanding of viral transmission dynamics (Zhang, Li, Zhang, Wang, & Molina, 2020) but also on the degree to which people voluntarily adopt and coordinate their behavior in the population at both local and global scales. As the Director-General of the WHO warns, increasing political polarization presents a direct threat to the effective management of the pandemic.

4. Discussion

Political orientation is associated with views on a panoply of social issues (Jost et al., 2003; Sterling, Jost, & Hardin, 2019), and the results of the two studies presented here show COVID-19 is no exception. Across two national studies we report that conservative political ideology is significantly linked to greater trust in government authorities to manage COVID-19, lower trust in scientists and the WHO and lower perceived risk of the virus. We also report that these ideological differences are significantly associated with behavior: conservative participants reported fewer protective actions such wearing a mask or handwashing. In the case of Study 2, results proved robust and were further corroborated with an alternative measure of political orientation: party identification (see supplementary materials). These effects were also not trivial, nearly all significant partisan differences revealed standardized effect-sizes in the range of medium to high (Cohen, 1988; Funder & Ozer, 2019).

Abstract

This study analyses the causal and long-run linkage between air transport and economic growth. It was conducted to validate the tourism-led growth hypothesis for the United States (US) during the period 1981–2017 and includes Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) alongside coal rents in the tourism-led growth hypothesis. This study presents a new direction for future studies by considering the relevance of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), particularly in the US. To achieve the stated claim, this study considers as additional explanatory variables how ICTs moderate the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on GDP. The empirical result confirms a connection between the Industry 4.0 era and the role of ICTs, which promotes substantial changes in the way of life and productivity. This has led to a vast technological advancement, which is in line with but at a faster pace than the technological advancement of previous revolutions. From empirical results, the study provides relevant policy recommendations related to the role of natural resources, new technologies and tourism on US GDP, while it also provides evidence of the positive effect of ICTs over FDI under the Industry 4.0 era.

5- Concluding remarks and policy recommendations

Although previous literature has investigated the role that air transport plays in economic growth, this study advances the exploration of air transport on economic growth under the TLGH framework by considering the relevance of Industry 4.0 in the US during the period 1981–2017. By filling this gap in the empirical literature, this study provides fresh evidence in the TLGH, considering coal rents, ICTs and FDI as additional explanatory variables. The empirical results, obtained from FMOLS, DOLS and CCR, confirm that investments in aviation infrastructure and support services are needed to enable sustainable strategic planning, providing an essential tool for the assessment of potential scenarios; where the tourism sector must be considered as the key to economic recovery and a critical factor in the development of the tourism sector. While the air transport industry makes a significant direct and indirect contribution to national income, the catalytic effects are evident in the US tourism sector. This contribution to GDP implies the necessity of studying the relationship between aviation and tourism. A limitation that has affected tourism growth is aviation industry policies, whether regulatory or not.

چکیده

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the nurse leader’s role in understanding the impact of American colonialism – specifically racism, a product of colonialism – as a key determinant in shaping the education of nursing students and its influence on practicing nurses. American values have been grounded in its colonialism and continue to be influential in shaping beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and policies within the United States. Like racism, American colonialism depends on its perceived death for its survival – this is its paradox. Historic roots of the nursing profession evolved within this context of American colonialism which has shaped the lens of individuals who are the leaders and practitioners in our profession. Therefore, it is important to examine strategies that challenge and decolonize the nursing profession and to become an accomplice, clarifying and addressing inclusion/exclusion in our profession’s leadership machine including: hiring/promotion practices, confrontation of White silence, critiquing design and dissemination of knowledge development, and fostering widespread change in nursing education/curriculum. Understanding the invisible internalization and manifestation of racism within our profession must be addressed if we are to advance the integrity and quality of education and practice in the nursing profession and to promote equity of healthcare among all individuals in the United States.

Conclusion

The nursing profession has developed and progressed within the context of American colonialism offering a basis for the colonizing of intellectual growth in our profession. Likewise, racism and white privilege perform a vital role in sustaining colonialism within our profession. Racism does not just add to risk for health disparities in our patients and loss of opportunities for ourselves, racism exacerbates these risks exponentially. It is imperative that both student and practicing nurses understand how their membership in the larger healthcare profession is shaped through the social, political, and historical contexts rooted in American colonialism. Becoming aware of and responding to how American colonialism creates and sustains health inequities is a fundamental step to creating a change in nursing practice, professional development, and education, as well as creating a new narrative for how we can optimize the health of all people. Decolonizing the nursing profession takes a willingness to recognize racism and its associated elements of white supremacy, white privilege, and whiteness as a personal worldview.

Abstract

The luminous environment affects how office workers perceive their work setting. However, research on how the lighting commissioning process associates with psychosocial variables relevant to office settings is lacking. This case study explored the extent to which employees working on a recently retrofitted floor of an administrative office building believed they could control the new lighting system. It also measured their levels of perceived productivity and affective organizational commitment to examine correlations between these variables and levels of satisfaction with the lighting commissioning process. Satisfaction with the commissioning process did not significantly correlate with perceived productivity, controllability, affective organizational commitment, or the average number of productive work hours reported after the retrofit. However, perceived productivity significantly and positively associated with perceived controllability and affective organizational commitment. Also, controllability and affective organizational commitment both significantly correlated with the number of productive work hours perceived. Results support interdisciplinary studies emphasizing the importance of lighting controllability in improving employees’ perceived performance and satisfaction at work. Results also offer practical suggestions concerning the commissioning process used in the case study.

1. Introduction

Research in the fields of environmental and industrial/organizational psychology, environmental engineering, interior design, and business has explored associations between building occupants’ preferences for, and perceptions of, environmental attributes at work and a number of psychosocial outcomes at various stages of the design cycle (e.g., [1–6]). While engineers and designers are becoming intent on creating high-performance buildings that offer occupants a sense of comfort and satisfaction [7,8], researchers and practitioners are understanding that the luminous environment significantly affects how employees perceive their work setting and their attitudes and behaviors within it.

While field research on how the lighting commissioning process associates with psychosocial variables is lacking (e.g., [2]), engineers and facility managers do commonly gather data from office workers about how the indoor environment affects their energy consumption, comfort, productivity, and efficiency [9–11,7,12,13]. Environmental psychologists are also interested in researching the ways in which building users perceive and utilize alterations in lighting environments. For example, the effects of different lighting designs on office workers’ performance, wellbeing, and health have been investigated, and changes have been found with respect to peoples’ performance associated with task visibility, practice, and fatigue (e.g., [2]). Bordass and Leaman [14] found that stable thermal conditions, usability of ventilation and lighting controls, operable windows, and views out of the building helped office workers feel satisfied and comfortable. Another study conducted after a lighting retrofit was done in a post office setting, as well as in a large manufacturing building, found that workers perceived themselves to be more productive after design changes [15]. Thus, an interdisciplinary approach to researching the effects of luminous environments on office workers, and how the lighting commissioning process plays a role in this relationship, is timely and prudent. Indeed, after the construction or retrofit stage, the commissioning stage is arguably the most important in ensuring a buildings’ proper function. Commissioning is often when a building’s controls can be optimized, and when lingering or new issues can be identified and addressed [8]. The more effective the commissioning process is (or appears to be from an occupant’s perspective), the better the outcomes will be with respect to building performance, as well as occupant wellbeing. Recent studies suggesting that daylighting, electric lighting, and glare are significant factors of occupant satisfaction with work settings (e.g., [16,7,17,18]) bolster the need to measure different psychosocial constructs experienced by office workers.

Although sector-specific studies on barriers to energy innovation, as well as integrated studies of influences on businesses’ energy behaviors at the individual, organizational, and institutional levels, are underrepresented in the body of literature [19], we know that occupant behavior can impact a retrofit program’s success [20] and that large organizations appear to be are responsible for a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions—and this trend is on the rise [21]. Andrews and Johnson [19] state that both quantitative and qualitative methodologies should be utilized to address gaps in research, and that “several of the most informative [studies] to date include detailed case studies of particular organizations” (pg. 205). The present case study approaches some of these gaps with a mixed-methodology approach as it takes advantage of an opportunity to augment interdisciplinary knowledge about LED projects in the commercial building sector by investigating a number of variables concerning user experience during a lighting retrofit and commissioning process.

Others have investigated similar variables with respect to changes in lighting design. One case study formalized usability metrics in a postoccupancy evaluation (POE) of several buildings retrofitted with newer lighting technologies and advanced HVAC control strategies [22]. However, while this POE evaluated the effectiveness and efficiency of advanced energy retrofits, along with user satisfaction and related objectives, it did not formally consider occupant reactions to the commissioning process, or ask occupants about their perceived productivity or levels of commitment toward the organization for which they worked. Moreover, studies that address various user preferences for LED lighting (e.g., [23]; Perino et al., 2005; [24]), advantages and drivers of LED projects in the commercial building market (e.g., [25,26]), as well as barriers to successfully implementing LED projects (e.g., [27,28]), do not often combine all of the variables accounted for in the present case study.

Despite a growing body of literature, more work is needed to understand the complex determinants of human satisfaction and comfort in indoor spaces. The present case study tests whether three psychosocial variables meaningfully associate with each other, and with office workers’ impressions of a recently completed lighting commissioning process, so that designers, engineers, and researchers alike can better understand how to incorporate occupant perceptions of a lighting retrofit into change management models. Given existing research findings, perceived productivity, perceived environmental controllability, and affective (emotional) organizational commitment ought to play more important roles in design and decision-making processes for architects, managers, developers, and other stakeholders interested in maintaining a luminous environment that employees feel is contributing to their success at work— this case study aims to explore this argument..

Management, Social Sustainability, Reputation, and Financial Performance Relationships: An Empirical Examination of U.S. Firms

Abstract

With growing evidence of positive relationships between social sustainability and financial performance, there is a critical need for understanding how innovative organizations integrate sustainability and tie theory to practice. The research in this study uses a sample of Fortune 500 firms simultaneously listed in the Newsweek Green rankings, The Corporate Knights Global 100, and the 100 Best Corporate Citizens lists. The analysis from this purposeful sample of leading firms reveals positive relationships between the management of sustainability practices leading to improved social sustainability performance and firm financial performance constructs. The results of this study advance construct and item development involving sustainability management and social sustainability practices while testing relationships to measures of financial performance. Further advances in the field and opportunities for future research involve testing larger cross-sector samples, the development and measurement of social sustainability practices from secondary sources, longitudinal studies, and the evolving nature of organizational performance measurement.

1 Introduction

Not too long ago, there was virtually no debate in scholarly or management circles over the relationship between environmental practices and firm performance. It was simply taken as a fact that pursuing sustainability goals was antithetical to sound business strategy and, quite possibly, a violation of the fiduciary duty of managers to shareholders (Bower & Paine, 2017; Friedman, 1970; Stout, 2012). Ironically, this same kind of debate is now taking place with the benefits of social sustainability practices. For the purposes of this study, social sustainability involves undertaking social analysis and assessment, enabling the identification of social opportunities, as well as the mitigation of social impacts and risks (Social Development, 2013).

Prior conventional wisdom held that any investment in improved environmental performance would contribute to penalties such as increased lead times, reduced quality, or increased costs—all of which reduced profits and decreased returns to stockholders (Walley & Whitehead, 1994). However, Michael Porter at Harvard challenged these entrenched beliefs and sparked a debate with a focus on “America’s Greening Strategy.” This debate increased theoretical and practical interest in the possibility that profitability and sustainability were not mutually exclusive goals. Ultimately, this brought about a dramatic shift in manufacturers’ attitudes toward a new management paradigm enabling environmental management practices (Porter, 1991). This debate has now extended beyond environmental practices into emerging social sustainability practices.

According to Porter, pollution was simply waste and organizations investing in environmental practices to reduce waste will have better performance. As a result, radical change has come about in management’s views on waste, the need for pollution reduction, and better environmental management. Engaging this same logic, social management practices provide new opportunities to reduce waste in the workforce. These social practices in governance and disclosure provide a new opportunity for research. The research presented in this study is one attempt to understand the evolving sustainability paradigm. In doing so, we are trying to understand organizational culture and opportunities for engaging workers to enhance the social performance and the reputation of the organization. The key to understanding these relationships can be elusive given the difficulties in measuring social practices.
