چکیده

در این مقاله یادگیری ماشینی و تحلیل پوششی اطلاعات (DEA) را به صورت سیستماتیک مورد استفاده قرار می دهیم تا پیام های توییتر، معیارهای توییتر و معیارهای مالی سازمانی برای کسب بینش درباره نوع شناسی پیام رسانی کارآمد در بازاریابی اجتماعی را تجزیه و تحلیل کنیم. یادگیری ماشینی خودکار برای طبقه بندی توییت های فروشگاه های مبلمان خرده فروشی در آمریکا استفاده می شود و از مدل های مختلف تحلیل پوششی اطلاعات (DEA) برای تجزیه و تحلیل معیارهای ورودی متعدد به منظور کسب یک رتبه بندی کارایی برای برندهای انتخاب شده استفاده می شود. بر اساس این تحلیل ها در این مقاله کاربردهای یافته های مدیران بازاریابی شرکت های با اندازه کوچک و متوسط (SME) را در سطح صنعت مورد بحث قرار می دهیم. پیشنهادات ارائه شده برای روشهای صنعت و همچنین مسیرهای پیشنهادی برای تحقیقات آینده را نیز فراهم می سازیم.

مقدمه

یک استراتژی رسانه های اجتماعی با طراحی خوب که محتوای سرگرم کننده را ایجاد و گردآوری می کند، به سازمان ها کمک می کند تا رقابت پذیری خود را در چشم انداز تجاری پویای امروزی حفظ کنند [1-3]. فعالیت ها و استراتژی های بازاریابی متعارف از لحاظ برآورده سازی الزامات خاص برای عملیات های مؤثر بازاریابی رسانه های اجتماعی (SMM) کمبود دارند چون تلاش می کنند که معانی متعددی را ایجاد نمایند [4]، در حالی که بازاریابی رسانه های اجتماعی (SMM) روی ایجاد روابط فردی و برقراری روابط بلندمدت متمرکز است. بازاریابی رسانه های اجتماعی (SMM) بازاریابی را برای یک گزینه بازاریابی معنادارتر و هدفمندتر، سفارشی و مبتنی بر فرد می سازد [1].

نتیجه گیری

با اینکه مقاله حاضر رشته های مختلفی همچون داده کاوی، بازاریابی رسانه های اجتماعی، و ارزیابی عملکرد را ترکیب و یکپارچه می سازد اما محدودیت هایی هم دارد و بنابراین ما فرصت هایی را برای تحقیقات آینده پیشنهاد می کنیم. تحقیق حاضر بر مبنای داده های محدودی بود که از یک شبکه اجتماعی منفرد، یعنی توییتر، بدست آمده بودند. توییتر مثال خوبی از اثبات مفهوم است؛ اما توییتر فقط نوع معینی از اطلاعات را فراهم می سازد. تحقیقات آینده از مزیت شامل سازی یک مجموعه داده بزرگتر و شبکه های اجتماعی رقیب دیگر، بهره مند خواهند شد.

به طور کلی، با توجه به فراگیر بودن و رشد بازاریابی رسانه های اجتماعی (SMM)، برای بررسی های مدیریتی و تحقیقاتی به روش های بیشتر و بهتری نیاز خواهیم داشت. این مقاله به دانش موجود درباره این بحث می افزاید و به ایجاد مبنای گسترده تری برای انجام تحقیقات بیشتر، کمک می کند.

Abstract

This article systematically applies machine learning and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to analyze Twitter messages, Twitter metrics, and organizational financial metrics to gain insights into impactful messaging typology on social media network. Automated machine learning is employed for the classification of tweets of select US Furniture Retail Stores while various DEA models are utilized to analyze multiple input metrics to obtain an efficiency ranking for the selected brands. Based on these analyses, the article discusses the implications of the findings for small and medium-sized enterprise marketing managers at the industry level. Recommendations for industry practice are also provided in addition to the directions regarding future research.

INTRODUCTION

Awell-designed social media strategy that creates and curates engaging content helps organizations maintain competitiveness in today’s dynamic business landscape [1]–[3]. Conventional marketing activities and strategies fall short in addressing specific requirements for efficient and effective social media marketing (SMM) operations because it seeks to sell through multiple means [4], in contrast to SMM which focuses on making individual connections and building long-lasting relationships. SMM customizes and personalizes marketing for a more meaningful and targeted marketing option [1].

CONCLUSION

While this article integrates various disciplines including data mining, social media marketing, and performance evaluation—there are limitations and opportunities for further research. This research was based on limited data from a single Social Media Network, Twitter. Twitter is a good case example for a proof of concept; but it provides only a certain type of information. Further research would benefit from including a larger dataset and other competing Social Media Networks.

Overall, given the pervasiveness and growth of SMM, more and better methodologies are needed for managerial and research investigations. This article adds to the discourse and helps build additional foundation for further investigation.

چکیده

صندوق سرمایه گذاری مشترک یک ابزار سرمایه گذاری محبوب در میان سرمایه گذاران است. سرمایه گذاران معمولاً عملکرد مدیر صندوق را بر اساس مقایسه با معیارها و الگوهای هدف قضاوت می کنند. از سوی دیگر، مدیران صندوق نیز به دانستن میزان یا علت عملکرد خوب یا ضعیف خود نسبت به همتایان خود در زمینه های مختلف مدیریت صندوق علاقه مندند. برای دستیابی به بینش و درک بهتر نسبت به این مسئله و طراحی یک معیار جامع و کامل برای سنجش عملکرد، نقش مدیریت صندوق به شکل یک فرآیند سه مرحله ای مفهوم پردازی شده است. بدین منظور، برای بررسی عملکرد کلی و مرحله ای مدیر، یک مدل تحلیل پوششی داده های شبکه  توسعه داده شده و فرض شده است که فرآیندهای سه مرحله ای تحت دو شرایط محیطی متفاوت – یعنی سطح ریسک متفاوت – فعالیت می کنند. فعالیت در سطوح متفاوت ریسک از طریق شرایط تحمیل شده برای معیارهای میانی مدل سازی می شود. در این میان به صورت تجربی نشان داده خواهد شد که شاخص جدیدی که برای بررسی عملکرد پیوند پیشنهاد شده است قدرت تمایز عملکرد را بهبود خواهد بخشید. در ادامه کاربردهای بیشتر مدل پیشنهادی بررسی خواهد شد.

1.مقدمه

Abstract

Mutual fund is a popular investment vehicle for investors. Investors usually judge fund manager performance relative to target benchmarks. Fund managers, on the other hand, are interested in knowing how/why they perform well or poorly relative to their peers in different aspects of fund management as well. To acquire more insights about this issue and design a comprehensive performance measure, fund management function is conceptualised as a three-stage production process. To assess overall and stage-level performance, a network data envelopment analysis model is developed. The stage-level processes are deemed to operate under two different environmental conditions—levels of risk exposure. Operation under different levels of risk exposure is modelled through conditions imposed on the intermediate measures. A new index proposed to assess linkage performance is demonstrated empirically to improve discriminatory power of performance. Further applications of the proposed model are discussed.

1. Introduction

U.S. mutual fund (MF) industry is the largest in the world with nearly $16 trillion in assets at year-end 2015. Fifty-two per cent of these MF assets are equity funds with bond funds (21%), money market funds (18%) and hybrid funds (9%) making up the rest (Investment Company Institute, 2016). Equity, bond and hybrid MFs are typical long-term investments whereas money market funds provide shortterm yields. Interest in MFs is generally widespread across households, business and institutional investors. MF is an attractive financial instrument for households because MFs are managed by financial experts and owning shares in a MF is a cost effective way of diversification. In the U.S., approximately eighty-nine per cent of MF assets are held by households. However, as large number of companies offers a wide choice, MF selection is not an easy task. Rating agencies such as Morningstar give guidance to this end by providing star ratings based on risk-adjusted return. Nevertheless, it is in the best interest of investors, whether big or small, to have a general overview of fund performance in addition to risk-adjusted return. Fund managers, on the other hand, will be interested in knowing why/how they perform well or poorly overall as well as in different aspects of fund management compared to their peers. Our aim is to investigate this issue through a novel multistage data envelopment analysis model.

Abstract

This paper examines limitations of the multi-stage DEA (data envelopment analysis) model in the literature. We focus on the DEA model with additive efficiency decomposition. We create taxonomy for the multi-stage DEA models and show when the decomposition weights can be non-increasing. When the decomposition weight for a stage is deemed reflective of the stage׳s relative importance, this property then implies that upstream stages (regardless the stage efficiency scores) in the model will obtain higher priority in efficiency decomposition. We also find that the non-increasing weights can affect the evaluation of overall and stage efficiency scores. We illustrate our findings through an empirical data set.

6. Discussion and conclusion

This paper reveals several previously overlooked properties about the decomposition weights in the additive multi-stage DEA model. We summarize our findings as follows. First, we find that the decomposition weights for the input-oriented multi-stage models are non-increasing in the sequence of stages. This means that the earlier stages would obtain higher decomposition weights and therefore a greater influence on the overall efficiency. In the two-stage model, for example, this means that the first-stage decomposition weight will be at least as high as 0.5. It is not too difficult to find examples where managers may find this property at odds with the process context in question. For example, one may argue that stage 2 in a two-stage process should carry a higher weight because stage 2 is closer to the customer, whose perception on stage 2 would be more influential to future demand. The traditional two-stage (or multi-stage) model is not flexible enough to adapt to such environments. Another possible issue is that the endogenous weights may deviate substantially from the evaluator’s preference and the best interest of the evaluated DMU (for example, if the evaluator prefers to set the weights as 0.1 and 0.9 for stages 1 and 2, respectively). Second, we demonstrate that the monotonic property of decomposition weights can interfere with the estimated stage and overall efficiency scores. The empirical application shows that the efficiency scores from a standard two-stage model are subject to the influence from decomposition weights. This also suggests the need to develop alternative models. We looked at one such alternative: the multi-stage DEA model with constant decomposition weights.

چکیده

هدف مقاله پژوهشی حاضر، طرح چارچوبی برای درک اولویت مصرف کننده است که بر متغیرها و برداشت مصرف کنندگان در ارائه دهندگان خدمات مخابراتی هند تاثیر می گذارد. مطالعه حاضر از یک رویکرد هیبریدی برای دستیابی به کارایی نسبی بر اساس مدل فازی AHP و DEA استفاده می کند. از AHP فازی برای تعیین وزن اولویت مصرف کننده به عنوان معیار و از روش DEA برای شناسایی ناکارآمدی ارائه دهندگان خدمات از نظر کارایی استفاده می شود. یافته های مطالعــــه حاضر نشان می دهد که برترین ارزشی که اولویت مصرف کننده را از طریق مشترکین موبایل تعیین می کند، پارامترهای شبکه و در ادامه طرح تعرفه پایین می باشد. هم چنین، نتایج ما نشان می دهد که کارایی فنی و شاخص پیشرفت فنی عوامل اصلی تخصیص منابع صنعت مخابرات هند محسوب می شوند. اغلب مطالعات صورت گرفته در زمینه FAHP–DEA هیبریدی به انتخاب فروشنده، مساله آرایش امکانات یا انتخاب عرضه کننده پرداخته اند. یک مطالعه از این دست، در زمینه اولویت مشترکین موبایل، سهم اصلی را در ادبیات بخش مخابرات هند بر عهده دارد. مقاله پژوهشی حاضر ضمن شناسایی متغیرهای مختلف به ارائه مدلی برای الگوبرداری ارائه دهندگان خدمات موبایل در هند پرداخته است. بر اساس تجزیه و تحلیل کارایی، تصمیم گیرندگان می توانند استراتژی بهبود عملکرد خود را با توجه به ارائه دهندگان خدمات کارآمد به عنوان الگوی آن ها، توسعه دهند. مزیت دیگر روش AHP/DEA هیبریدی آن است که با استفاده از داده های ورودی و خروجی، می توان از نظر ریاضی کلیه مقایسات زوجی را در مدل های فازی AHP و DEA به دست آورد و هیچ نوع تجزیه و تحلیل ذهنی در این روش دخالت ندارد.

مطالعه حاضر پیامدهای مهمی از نظر عملی دارد. در این تحقیق ما به مطالعه نحوه ارزیابی کاراییی نسبی ative با استفاده از DEA بر اساس عملکرد و اولویت های مشتری توسط شرکت های مخابراتی پرداختیم. بسیاری از ارائه دهندگان فاقد توانایی دستیابی به حداکثر کارایی به دلیل بسیاری از شرایط نامساعد بودند. نتیجه این تجزیه و تحلیل نشان می دهد که شرکت های خصوصی مانند Airtel، Vodafone و Idea در مرز کارایی قرار دارند. اگر چه دولت علاقه شدید و طرح های مدون برای آزادسازی بخش مخابرات داشته اما خصوصی سازی با موانع متعددی مواجه بوده است. در حالی که بی ثباتی سیاسی و فقدان اجماع عمومی بر آزادسازی اقتصاد دلیل اصلی کُند بودن فرآیند اصلاحات بوده، تضاد منافع بین سیاست گذاران و ارائه دهندگان خدمات، شرایط سخت صدور مجوز و پیشنهادات مجوز ناموجه توسط مجوزدهندگان بخش خصوصی نیز به این فرآیند لطمه رسانده است.

Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to develop a framework to understand the consumer’s preference affecting variables and consumer’s perception choice in telecommunication service providers in India. The present study use a hybrid approach to access the relative efficiency based on fuzzy AHP and DEA model. The fuzzy AHP is used to determine weights of the consumer’s preference as criteria and DEA method is used to identify the inefficient service providers in terms of efficiency. Findings of the study suggest that the most preferred value that determines consumer’s preference by mobile subscribers is network parameters, followed by low tariff scheme. Our results also show that technical efficiency and technical progress indicator are the main factors of resources allocation of Indian telecom industry. Most of the work on this hybrid FAHP–DEA is dedicated to either vendor selection, facility layout problem or supplier selection. A study of this kind, in the context of mobile subscriber’s preference is an original contribution to the literature of Indian telecom sector. This research paper identifies the different variables and then a model is prepared for benchmarking of the mobile service providers in India. Based on the efficiency analysis decision makers can develop strategy to improve their performance according to efficient service providers as their role model. The other advantage of this hybrid AHP/DEA method is that by using inputs and outputs data we can derive mathematically all pair wise comparisons in fuzzy AHP and DEA models and there is no any form of subjective analysis engaged within the methodology.

6- Conclusion and policy implication

This study has important implications for practice. In this research we studied on how telecom companies measures relative efficiency using DEA based on performance and customer’s preferences. Many providers don’t have ability to achieve the maximum efficiency due to many adverse conditions. The result of this analysis shows that private utilities like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea lie on the efficiency frontier. Though the government has taken keen interest and formulated initiatives for liberalizing the telecom sector, privatization has observed several obstacles. While political instability and lack of consensus on economic liberalization have been the main reasons for slowdown of the reform processes, conflict of interest between the policy makers and service providers, strict licensing conditions and unjustified license bids by the private licensees have also marred the process.

Abstract

Lack of discrimination power and poor weight dispersion remain major issues in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Since the initial multiple criteria DEA (MCDEA) model developed in the late 1990s, only goal programming approaches; that is, the GPDEA-CCR and GPDEA-BCC were introduced for solving the said problems in a multi-objective framework. We found GPDEA models to be invalid and demonstrate that our proposed bi-objective multiple criteria DEA (BiO-MCDEA) outperforms the GPDEA models in the aspects of discrimination power and weight dispersion, as well as requiring less computational codes. An application of energy dependency among 25 European Union member countries is further used to describe the efficacy of our approach.

1 Introduction

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was first proposed by Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes (1978) and remained the leading technique for measuring the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) based on their respective multiple inputs and outputs. DEA has been the fastest growing discipline in the past three decades covering easily over a thousand papers in the Operations Research and Management Science discipline (Emrouznejad, Parker, & Tavares, 2008; Hatami-Marbini, Emrouznejad, & Tavana, 2011). The efficiency of a DMU is defined as a weighted sum of its outputs divided by the weighted sum of its inputs on a bounded ratio scale.

One of the drawbacks of DEA is the lack of discrimination among efficient decision making units (DMUs), hence yielding many DMUs to be efficient. The problem is highlighted when the number of DMUs evaluated is significantly lesser than the number of inputs and outputs used in the evaluation. The weights derived from a DEA analysis may reveal that some inputs or outputs have zero values. This is counter-intuitive especially in a decision making exercise, where one expects to use all the inputs and output values that are rated for the DMUs. Hence, it further implies that some of the variables were not used in the evaluation judgment in achieving the final ranking. On the contrary, the unrealistic weight distribution for DEA also occurs when some DMUs are rated as efficient due to extremely large weights in a single output and/ or extremely small weights in a single input.

Thompson, Singleton, Thrall, and Smith (1986) are among the first authors to propose the use of weight restriction to increase the discrimination power of DMUs. The issue was immediately picked up by many authors, including Dyson and Thanassoulis (1988), Charnes, Cooper, Huang, and Sun (1990), Thanassoulis and Allen (1998). Hence, several methods such as assurance region (AR) procedure (Khalili, Camanho, Portela, & Alirezaee, 2010; Mecit & Alp, 2013; Sarrico & Dyson, 2004; Thompson, Langemeier, Lee, & Thrall, 1990) and cone ratio envelopment (Cao & Kong, 2010; Charnes et al., 1990) were addressed in the literature as strategies to solve problems arising from unrealistic weight distribution. However, there are some drawbacks to the methods – AR and cone ratio techniques are highly dependent on the measurement of the inputs-outputs units, which may lead to infeasible solutions. In other words, both the methods incorporate extra constraints to the model; thus, making it harder to solve the problem.

Subsequently, other DEA models were introduced in the literature to overcome the discriminant power problems, such as the super-efficiency model (Andersen & Petersen, 1993; Chen, 2005; Chen, Du, & Huo, 2013; Lee, Chu, & Zhu, 2011) and cross-efficiency evaluation technique (Anderson, Hollingsworth, & Inman, 2002; Doyle & Green, 1995; Green, Doyle, & Cook, 1996; Sexton, Silkman, & Hogan, 1986; Wang & Chin, 2010, 2011). The super-efficiency DEA model may obtain infeasible solutions for efficient DMUs; particularly, under variable returns to scale (VRS) model. However, attempts had been made to solve the infeasibility problem in super efficiency methods. Chen (2005) proposed an approach in which both input-oriented and output-oriented super-efficiency models are used to fully characterize the super-efficiency model, thus claiming that the approach kept infeasibility to a rare occasion. However, Soleimani-damaneh, Jahanshahloo, and Foroughi (2006) presented some counter examples to negate Chen’s (2005) claims without any proposed alternative. Drawing from two main sources (i.e. Chen, 2005; Cook, Liang, Zha, & Zhu, 2009), Lee et al. (2011) later provided a solution by a two-stage process catering to adjustments in input saving and output surpluses. Chen and Liang (2011) subsequently formulated a one-model solution to the two-stage process. Lee and Zhu (2012) found that the solution can still be infeasible should some of the input variables have zero values.

With regards to cross-efficiency evaluation technique, the nonuniqueness of the DEA weights could provide a large number of multiple optimal solutions for DEA models. Although recent improvements of cross-efficiency evaluation techniques were proposed (Angiz & Sajedi, 2012), the solution is computationally expensive with the need to solve a series of linear programming problems. The suggestion of imposing secondary goals to improve variability of cross efficiency scores still leaves the non-uniqueness problem looming (see Cook & Zhu, 2013).

Drawing from a multiple objective decision making framework, the multiple criteria (or multi-objective) DEA model (Chen, Larbani, & Chang, 2009; Foroughi, 2011; Li & Reeves, 1999) was suggested as a means to overcome discriminant power and weight dispersion problems. However, the original formulation of Li and Reeves (1999) does not promise complete ranking but merely presupposes the decision maker to use its model’s 3 objectives interactively. Thus, in the MCDEA model, the three objectives are analyzed separately; one at a time, and no preference order was set for those objectives. Bal, Örkcü, and Çelebioglu (2010) recently proposed the goal programming approach for solving all 3 objectives of the MCDEA model simultaneously. Their GPDEA models (i.e. constant returns to scale and variable returns to scale) were claimed to improve the dispersion of weights and discriminatory power in a MCDEA framework. This paper highlights that those claims were unfounded, and goes onto show a new bi-objective multiple criteria DEA (BiO-MCDEA) model that could solve those drawbacks.

The focus of this paper is to introduce a weighted model for improving the discrimination power and weight dispersion in the domain of Multiple Criteria Data Envelopment Analysis (MCDEA). The rest of the paper is organized as follows. Section 2 gives a brief description of the multiple criteria data envelopment analysis (MCDEA) and the more recent goal programming data envelopment analysis (GPDEA) as a procedure for MCDEA. Section 3 highlights the drawbacks of using GPDEA to represent MCDEA analysis. We therefore introduce an alternative bi-objective multiple criteria model (BiO-MCDEA) to improve the discrimination power of MCDEA in Section 4. An application of energy dependency among 25 EU member countries demonstrates the efficacy of the model in Section 5. Concluding remarks are given in Section 6.

A survey of DEA applications

Abstract

The literature of data envelopment analysis (DEA) encompasses many surveys, yet all either emphasize methodologies or do not make a distinction between methodological and application papers. This study is the first literature survey that focuses on DEA applications, covering DEA papers published in journals indexed by the Web of Science database from 1978 through August 2010. The results show that on the whole around two-thirds (63.6%) of DEA papers embed empirical data, while the remaining one-third are purely-methodological. Purely-methodological articles dominated the first 20 years of DEA development, but the accumulated number of application-embedded papers caught up to purely-methodological papers in 1999. Among the multifaceted applications, the top-five industries addressed are: banking, health care, agriculture and farm, transportation, and education. The applications that have the highest growth momentum recently are energy and environment as well as finance. In addition to the basic statistics, we uncover the development trajectory in each application area through the main path analysis. An observation from these works suggests that the two-step contextual analysis and network DEA are the recent trends across applications and that the two-step contextual analysis is the prevailing approach.

1 Introduction

The value of data envelopment analysis (DEA) lies in its capability to relatively evaluate the individual efficiency or performance of a decision making unit (DMU) within a target group of interest that operates in a certain application domain such as the banking industry, health care industry, agriculture industry, transportation industry, etc. All these industries practically adopt DEA for a variety of reasons, as Golany and Roll [85] pointed out that it can be applied to: identify sources of inefficiency, rank the DMUs, evaluate management, evaluate the effectiveness of programs or policies, create a quantitative basis for reallocating resources, etc. Some 30 years after the publication of the influential paper by Charnes et al. [1], the application domain for DEA has grown to such an extent that almost no one in the DEA research community is able to keep track of its development and in particular on how widely DEA is applied to real world applications.

Most previous general literature surveys for DEA place their emphasis on the methodologies, as the following examples show. Seiford and Thrall [2] reviewed early-stage DEA development. Seiford [3] traced the evolution of DEA for the period 1978 through 1995. Cooper et al. [4] evaluated some DEA models and measures. Cook and Seiford [5] performed a comprehensive survey on 30 years of DEA developments since 1978. Liu et al. [6] conducted a citation-based survey and depicted the main DEA development paths. All these surveys have elaborated on methodological topics such as generic DEA models, network models, multiplier restrictions, considerations on the status of variables, data variation, etc.

As we are aware of, the literature offers no survey in regards to the development of DEA applications. The closest comments in the literature on how DEA is applied are: ‘‘In total, 67%1 of the (DEA) articles presented a real-world application’’ [7] and ‘‘Banking, education (including higher education), health care, and hospital efficiency were found to be the most popular application areas’’ [8]. These comments provide some information, yet a more extensive survey is needed in order to benefit DEA researchers and practitioners. After all, the main purpose for developing the DEA method is to apply it.

In the development of any discipline, assessing what has been done can provide practical information in setting up strategies ahead of the next stage for various types of researchers. For example, basic statistics such as the number of application papers suggest the overall usefulness of the developed methodology. Theoreticians may need to find ways to improve their methods upon seeing that they are not frequently applied. Other statistics such as the major application area can inspire theoreticians to develop methods to specifically meet the needs of these areas. In addition, information on how each individual model was applied in applications indicates the trend in methodology adoption and thus helps users of the methods to catch up with the latest technology. A newcomer to a discipline would certainly be eager to know the set of ‘‘must read’’ papers to determine his/her research direction in that discipline.

The purpose of this study is to provide the above statistics and information in the DEA application area through a rigorous analysis. We pursue the answers to the following questions: What is the proportion of application papers in the DEA literature? Exactly how widely is DEA applied to real world applications? What are the major DEA applications? What is the trend of the methodological approach for each application area? Lastly, what are the development trajectories for each application area? Through these research questions, this study contributes to the DEA literature in three major aspects. First, it differentiates between methodological articles and application articles and provides basic statistics on application articles, in contrast with previous similar studies [7,8] that present statistics on the whole set of DEA literature. Second, it provides information on the mostcited methodological works in each application area. Third, through the main path analysis, it identifies papers that stand out in the important historical development path of each major application area.

In order to answer these questions, we classify a set of DEA papers into methodological and non-methodological works and then further segment the empirical works based on the real world problem that is discussed, tested, and validated within each work. After the classification, the basic statistics are summarized. We then present a list of the most-cited methodological papers for each of the five most popular application areas. In the end, the citation-based main path analysis as described in Liu et al. [6] is applied to these five most popular application areas to uncover their development trajectories.

This paper is organized as follows. In the next section we describe the dataset and the method of analysis. Section 3 discusses the basic statistics for the DEA applications. Section 4 presents the most-cited methodological works for the five major DEA applications. Section 5 introduces the main paths of the five most popular application areas. The last section draws conclusions, including implications and insights from the analysis results.

چکیده

6- نتیجه‌گیری‌ها

ما در این مقاله روشی جدیدی را با استفاده از DEA شبکه‌ی دو مرحله‌ای برای ارزیابی عملکردهای طراحی محصول پایدار ارائه می‌دهیم. ما کارایی طراحی را به عنوان یک معیار کلیدی عملکرد طراحی مفهوم‌سازی می‌کنیم و یک مدل DEA شبکه را برای پیوند مشخصات کلیدی مهندسی، ویژگی‌های محصول و عملکرد‌های زیست محیطی در طراحی محصول توسعه می‌دهیم. ما همچنین چگونگی استفاده از مدل‌های متمرکز و نامتمرکز برای تجزیه و تحلیل رویکردهای همزمان، کنشگرا و واکنشی اتخاذ شده توسط شرکت‌ها برای طراحی پایدار را مورد بحث قرار می‌دهیم. علاوه‌براین، ما از داده‌های مشخصات مهندسی، ویژگی‌های محصول و عملکردهای انتشارات گلخانه‌ای در پایگاه داده‌ی آزمایش انتشارات خودرو برای نشان دادن کاربردهای جهان واقعی مدل DEA خود در ارزیابی عملکردهای طراحی پایدار در هر دو بخش خصوصی و دولتی استفاده می‌کنیم. پیام اصلی که در اینجا ارائه می‌شود این است که طراحی پایدار نیاز به در نظر گرفتن سازش بین ویژگی‌های سنتی و زیست محیطی ندارد. از طریق تصمیمات طراحی نوآرانه برای انتخاب مواد، مهندسی محصول، و همچنین توسعه‌ی پوشش/مرز تکنولوژی، یک شرکت می‌تواند کارامدترین روش برای ترکیب مشخصات و ویژگی‌های محصول که منجر به عملکردهای زیست محیطی بهتر می‌شوند را بیابد. روش مبتنی بر DEA ما، ابزار نوآورانه‌ای را برای تصمیم گیرندگان به منظور اجرای نوع برنده-برنده‌ی طراحی محصول و استراتژی‌های نوآوری برای دستیابی به پایداری طولانی مدت جامعه‌ی انسانی فراهم می‌کند.

Abstract

Sustainable product design has been considered as one of the most important practices for achieving sustainability. To improve the environmental performances of a product through product design, however, a firm often needs to deal with some difficult technical trade-offs between traditional and environmental attributes which require new design concepts and engineering specifications. In this paper, we propose a novel use of the two-stage network Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate sustainable product design performances. We conceptualize “design efficiency” as a key measurement of design performance in terms of how well multiple product specifications and attributes are combined in a product design that leads to lower environmental impacts or better environmental performances. A two-stage network DEA model is developed for sustainable design performance evaluation with an “industrial design module” and a “bio design module.” To demonstrate the applications of our DEA-based methodology, we use data of key engineering specifications, product attributes, and emissions performances in the vehicle emissions testing database published by the US EPA to evaluate the sustainable design performances of different automobile manufacturers. Our test results show that sustainable design does not need to mean compromise between traditional and environmental attributes. Through addressing the interrelatedness of subsystems in product design, a firm can find the most efficient way to combine product specifications and attributes which leads to lower environmental impacts or better environmental performances. This paper contributes to the existing literature by developing a new research framework for evaluating sustainable design performances as well as by proposing an innovative application of the two-stage network DEA for finding the most eco-efficient way to achieve better environmental performances through product design.

6- Conclusion

In this paper, we propose a new methodology with the use of two-stage network DEA for evaluating sustainable product design performances. We conceptualize design efficiency as a key measurement of design performance, and develop a network DEA model to link key engineering specifications, product attributes, and environmental performances in sustainable design. We also discuss how to use the centralized and decentralized models to analyze the simultaneous, proactive, and reactive approaches adopted by firms for sustainable design. In addition, we use data of engineering specifications, product attributes, and emissions performances in the vehicle emissions testing database to demonstrate the real-world applications of our DEA model for evaluating sustainable design performances in both the public and private sectors. The main message delivered here is that sustainable design does not need to mean compromise between traditional and environmental attributes. Through innovative design decisions for material selection, product reengineering, as well as expanding the technology envelope/frontier, a firm can find the most efficient way to combine product specifications and attributes which leads to better environmental performances. Our DEA-based methodology provides an innovative tool for decision makers to implement the win–win type of product design and innovation strategies for achieving the long-term sustainability of human society.
