چکیده

Abstract

Social networks are strongly present in the daily life of modern society. Most people use these social networks to share information about their lives, their opinions, places they visit and their state of mind. Generally, these posts are composed of various information, being the location of the users location part of the data. The purpose of this work is to obtain the location of the posts and observe the users mobility pattern in the city of Porto, Portugal. This paper discusses the technologies available for obtaining the data, the social networks currently worth studying and their respective restrictions. It also explores new approaches to collect the data from the desired social networks, respecting all restrictions currently applied. The different software solutions developed for the social networks interactions are explored and described in depth. Subsequently, the necessary software for social networks is reviewed, the possible algorithms for data mining are discussed and its implementation is presented. Finally, the results obtained are interpreted and studied according to the characteristics of the city, tourism promotions and transport routes.

As the population grows exponentially around the world, most urban planning methodologies have also had to evolve to integrate the latest technologies and ensure that processes do not become obsolete. Urban planning is the subject responsible for designing, building and developing the land, air and water resources to better serve the population. It is also responsible for subjects like infrastructure, communications, distribution and public transportation. McGill The study of people’s mobility provides information on public transport infrastructure and routes, police distribution and road development. Not so long ago, these studies were expensive and long. However, nowadays people are willing to share personal information through smartphone apps.

5. Conclusions And Future Work

First of all, this research proved to be possible to still use location based social networks for collecting data while being subject to many restrictions due to GDPR. Then, the data collected provided enough information and details for drawing meaningful conclusions about users mobility patterns.

چکیده

پیش زمینه: طراحی شهری وابسته به خودرو در سطح شهرهای پرجمعیت منجر به آلودگی، شیوه زندگی ساکن و افزایش آسیب پذیری در برابر تغییرات آب و هوایی شده است. مدل سوپر بلوک بارسلونا یکی از راهکارها و استراتژی های ابتکاری در برنامه ریزی شهری و حمل و نقل است که هدف آن اصلاح فضاهای عمومی مردم – کاهش حمل و نقل موتوری – ارتقای تحرک پایدار و شیوه زندگی فعال و همچنین ایجاد فضاهای سبز و کاهش تاثیرات تغییرات آب و هوا می باشد. ما در این تحقیق تاثیرات سلامت استفاده از این مدل را در بارسلونا ارزیابی کرده ایم.
روش ها: ما در این تحقیق یک ارزیابی کمیتی از تاثیرات سلامت (HU) در ساکنان بیش از 20 سال بارسلونا انجام دادیم (N=1301827) و از تحقیق انجام شده در سطح منطقه سوپر بلوک (N=503) و ارزش ارزیابی قیاسی برای برآورد ریسک استفاده کرده ایم. در این تحقیق 1- تغییرات مورد انتظار در (a) فعالیت فیزیکی حمل و نقل (PA) – (b) آلودگی هوا (NO2) – (c) صدای حاصل از آلودگی صوتی جاده ای – (d) فضای سبز- (e) کاهش تاثیر جزیره گرمای شهری (UHI) از طریق کاهش گرما 2- معیار بندی ارزیابی های ریسک و 3- محاسبه حجم تاثیرات سلامت را انجام داده ایم. اهداف ارزیابی شده قابل پیشگیری عبارتند از: مرگ و میر پیش از بلوغ – تغییر در امید به زندگی و تاثیرات اقتصادی.
نتایج: ما برآورد کردیم که 667 مرگ پیش از بلوغ (235-1098:95y.CI) می تواند بصورت سالانه و از طریق استفاده از سوپر بلوک 503 پیشگیری شود. بیشترین تعداد مرگ و میر قابل پیشگیری می تواند با کاهش NO2 (291.95%-PI=0-83) در ارتباط باشد و بعد از آن عواملی چون صدا) (163- 95%CI 83-246 – گرما (117.95%-CI101-137) و توسعه فضای سبز (60.95%CI:0-119) قرار می گیرد. افزایش PA برای تعداد 65 هزار نفر که سفرهای ماشینی – موتوری را به حمل و نقل عمومی و فعال تغییر داده اند منجر به افزایش میانگین امید به زندگی برای نوجوانان بارسلونا در 200 روز (95%CI-99-297) و تاثیرات اقتصادی سالانه 1.7 بیلیون یورو شده است (95%CI:0.6-2.8) .
بحث: سوپر بلوک های بارسلونا به کاهش تاثیرات مضر محیطی (مثل آلودگی هوا – صدا و گرما) کمک می کند در حالی که همزمان سطح PA و دسترسی به فضای سبز را افزایش می دهد و مزایای سلامت را فراهم می آورد. برای توزیع یکنواخت مزایای سلامت این سوپر بلوک ها باید به طور منسجم در شهرها استفاده شوند. مزایای مشابهی نیز برای سایر شهرهای مواجه با چالش هایی از جمله آلودگی محیطی، آسیب پذیری در برابر تغییرات آب و هوا و کاهش سطح PA با استفاده از مدل سوپر بلوک بارسلونا انتظار می رود.

مدل سوپر بلوک یک مدل جدید در طراحی شهری و یک راهکار سلامت عمومی است که برای اصلاح فضای عمومی و کمک به تمیز تر شدن و سبز تر شدن شهر، فعالیت فیزیکی بیشتر و اصلاح تغییرات آب و هوایی از طریق ایجاد ساختار جدید در طراحی شهری و سیستم حمل و نقل کمک می کند. ما نشان دادیم که این مدل ها دارای پتانسیل کاهش میزان مرگ و میر و افزایش قابل توجه LE از طریق کاهش آلودگی هوا، صدا و گرما و افزایش دسترسی به فضاهای سبز و عملکرد PA حمل و نقل محور می باشد. حجم تاثیرات سلامتی ارزیابی شده باید با کاربرد سریع در بارسلونا و معیار بندی سایر فاکتورها همراه باشند، که مزایای کمتری برای آن انتظار می رود. برای توزیع کامل و برابر مزایا، مدل سوپر بلوک باید در تمام شهر استفاده شود.

Abstract

Background
Car-dependent city planning has resulted in high levels of environmental pollution, sedentary lifestyles and increased vulnerability to the effects of climate change. The Barcelona Superblock model is an innovative urban and transport planning strategy that aims to reclaim public space for people, reduce motorized transport, promote sustainable mobility and active lifestyles, provide urban greening and mitigate effects of climate change. We estimated the health impacts of implementing this urban model across Barcelona.
Methods
We carried out a quantitative health impact assessment (HIA) study for Barcelona residents ≥20 years (N = 1,301,827) on the projected Superblock area level (N = 503), following the comparative risk assessment methodology. We 1) estimated expected changes in (a) transport-related physical activity (PA), (b) air pollution (NO2), (c) road traffic noise, (d) green space, and (e) reduction of the urban heat island (UHI) effect through heat reductions; 2) scaled available risk estimates; and 3) calculated attributable health impact fractions. Estimated endpoints were preventable premature mortality, changes in life expectancy and economic impacts.
Results
We estimated that 667 premature deaths (95% CI: 235–1,098) could be prevented annually through implementing the 503 Superblocks. The greatest number of preventable deaths could be attributed to reductions in NO2 (291, 95% PI: 0–838), followed by noise (163, 95% CI: 83–246), heat (117, 95% CI: 101–137), and green space development (60, 95% CI: 0–119). Increased PA for an estimated 65,000 persons shifting car/motorcycle trips to public and active transport resulted in 36 preventable deaths (95% CI: 26–50). The Superblocks were estimated to result in an average increase in life expectancy for the Barcelona adult population of almost 200 days (95% CI: 99–297), and result in an annual economic impact of 1.7 billion EUR (95% CI: 0.6–2.8).
Discussion
The Barcelona Superblocks were estimated to help reduce harmful environmental exposures (i.e. air pollution, noise, and heat) while simultaneously increase PA levels and access to green space, and thereby provide substantial health benefits. For an equitable distribution of health benefits, the Superblocks should be implemented consistently across the entire city. Similar health benefits are expected for other cities that face similar challenges of environmental pollution, climate change vulnerability and low PA levels, by adopting the Barcelona Superblock model.

5- Conclusions

The Barcelona Superblock model is a promising urban model as well as public health strategy to reclaim public space for people and help the city become cleaner, greener, more physically active and climate change resilient through the reconfiguration of urban and transport structures. We showed that the Superblocks have the potential to reduce the premature mortality burden and increase LE considerably through reductions in air pollution, noise and heat and increased access to green space and transport-related PA performance. The magnitude of estimated health impacts should make a case for the rapid implementation in Barcelona and the scale-up to other cities, where similar health benefits can be expected. For full and equitable distribution of health benefits, the Superblock model should consistently be implemented across the entire city

Urban land-use change: The role of strategic spatial planning

Abstract

To date land-change science has devoted little attention to spatial policy and planning in urban landscapes despite the widely accepted premise that planning affects urban land change. This is primarily due to lack of relevant data and an underdeveloped theoretical understanding regarding the impact of spatial planning on urban land change. To be able to better analyse the role of spatial planning in urban development we need to distinguish: 1) the intentions expressed in the plans; 2) the means of implementation of the plans through governance processes and 3) the role of external conditions influencing implementation. Based on a synthesis of the current literature on how spatial planning is implemented in land-change models, and drawing from the literature on planning evaluation, we sketch a research agenda to further develop the understanding of these three components and their interconnections as well as their application in quantitative land-change modelling approaches for urban regions.

1 Introduction

Land change is one of the key processes of global environmental change (Magliocca et al., 2015; Turner II et al., 2007; Verburg et al., 2015). The studies on the topic have gradually advanced from a focus on patterns of land-use and land-cover change to an analysis of dynamic interactions within socio-ecological systems and the resulting impacts on, for example, ecosystem services and biodiversity (Rindfuss et al., 2004; Rounsevell et al., 2012). In this context, land change is understood as the result of interacting political/institutional, economic, cultural, technological and natural/spatial driving forces and the respective actors (Bürgi et al., 2004; Hersperger et al., 2010). Whereas data on economic and natural conditions have a long tradition in being used to explain land changes, researchers only recently started to pay attention to policies, plans, and regulations on land use, within their specific institutional and governmental contexts. Meta-analytical studies have emphasized the role of land-use policies and spatial planning as a major underlying driving factor for many different land-use change processes (van Vliet et al., 2016).

Compared with forest and agricultural related research, studies on land change in urban regions are so far a small part of land-system research (Geist et al., 2006; Magliocca et al., 2015; Seto et al., 2011). However, urban regions, which are also broadly defined as cities or metropolitan regions, are some of the most dynamic land-change systems worldwide. With strong further urbanization expected over the coming decades they will cover increasing areas of the earth surface and host the majority of the human population (Seto et al., 2012). At the same time, urban land change is not restricted to the core city, but includes many new urban-rural spaces functionally tied to the city (Brenner and Schmid, 2015) and has many impacts on rural hinterlands (Bren d’Amour et al., 2016) and hence deserves more attention in landchange science (Müller and Munroe, 2014).

A widely accepted premise is that, especially in urban regions, spatial planning – a multifaceted activity with many purposes, including project planning, master planning, land-use planning and strategic planning – influences patterns of land use and land cover (Couclelis, 2005). Amongst the many purposes of spatial planning, spatial planners and governments have been trying to steer urbanization processes with the aim of developing sustainable cities and regions (Albrechts et al., 2017; Collier et al., 2013). However, conceptualizing the role of planning in guiding land change is a great challenge (McNeill et al., 2014). This is partly due to the fact that research on the contribution of planning to land change is at the interface of two paradigms (Briassoulis, 2008; Hillier, 2007): planning scholars tend to stress contextuality and social construction of space; whereas land-change scientists incline to assume the existence of realities that can be objectively described and measured and lend themselves to generalizations. The difference between the two paradigms can be illustrated through how they position themselves in respect to the concepts of space and uncertainty. Many urban geographers and planning theoreticians conceive space as a social construct (Harvey, 2006; Lefebvre, 1991) and expect future urban development to be open ended. Uncertainty is inherent; to be expected and subject to exogenous factors (Graham and Healey, 1999). Land-change scientists quantify and model space by identifying correlation or causality between drivers and outcomes, and strive to identify sources and levels of uncertainty in landcover projections (Alexander et al., 2016). Research to bridge the two paradigms is sparse. Consequently, planning is not well integrated in quantitative land-change assessments.

تحقیقات زیادی روی شهرهای هوشمند انجام شده که تنها تعداد کمی از آنها از دیدگاه آموزشی به بررسی شهرهای هوشمند پرداخته است این مقاله به بررسی چهارچوب ساختاری شهرهای هوشمند از منظر آموزشی می پردازد تا اهمیت ارتقای یادگیری هوشمند را در شهرهای هوشمند مشخص کند. سپس مشخصات یادگیری هوشمند مشخص می شود، و تفاوت یادگیری کلاسی سنتی، یادگیری دیجیتال و یادگیری هوشمند تحلیل می شوند. پس از آن، این مقاله به تحلیل محیط های یادگیری معمولی در شهرها می پردازد: مدرسه، خانواده، جامعه، محل کار و موزه. بر اساس این تحلیل، ما نشانگرهایی را برای ارزیابی محیط های یادگیری در شهرهای هوشمند توسعه می دهیم، که برای ارزیابی محیط های یادگیری در 68 شهر انتخاب شده در چین استفاده شده اند.

4- ارزیابی محیط های یادگیری در شهرهای هوشمند

پنج محیط یادگیری بالا جوی را برای یادگیری در شهر فراهم می کنند که برای پرورش استعدادهای دارای مهارت های خلاق مهم هستند و همۀ نوآوری های را در شهرهای هوشمند بر عهده می گیرند. تجربه یادگیری شهروندان، تجربه قابل زندگی و توسعه نوآوری شهری، همگی به این محیط های یادگیری مرتبط هستند. بنابراین، درک محیط های یادگیری معمول در شهرهای هوشمند از اهمیت برخوردار است، به همین دلیل نشانگرهای زیر را برای ارزیابی این محیط های یادگیری ایجاد می کنیم. برای محیط یادگیری کلاسی، معمولاً از این ابعاد ارزیابی می شود: نسبت تعداد دانش آموزان و تعداد کامپیوترها، نسبت تعداد معلمان و تعداد کامپیوترها، پوشش شبکه ای، تجهیزات شبکه ای، کلاس های چندرسانه ای و غیره (لیو و غیره، 2014). در این پژوهش، اختصاص منابع کامپیوتری به مدارس ابتدایی و متوسطه، کلاس های چندرسانه ای و منابع دیجیتال مدارس ابتدایی و متوسطه انتخاب شد، مانند شاخص های زیرسطح برای شاخص محیط یادگیری مدرسه (جدول 2).

Abstract

Lots of research has been done on smart cities, however, only few studies can be found on smart cities from the educational perspective. This paper will discuss the framework of building smart city from educational perspective to identify the importance of promoting smart learning in smart cities. Then the characters of smart learning are elaborated, and the difference of traditional classroom learning, digital learning and smart learning are analyzed. After that, the paper analyzes the typical learning environments in cities: school, family, community, workplace, and museum. Based on the analysis, we develop indicators to evaluate learning environments in smart cities, which was used to evaluate the learning environments in the selected 68 cities in China.

4- Evaluating Learning Environments in Smart Cities

The above five typical learning environments provide the atmosphere for learning in a city, which is vital for cultivating talents with creative skills to deal with all the inno‐ vations in smart cities. Citizen’s learning experience, livable experience and city inno‐ vation development, are all connected with these learning environments. Therefore, it is important to understand the typical learning environments in smart cities, that is why we create the following indicators to evaluate these learning environments. For school learning environment, it is normally evaluated from these aspects: the proportion of the number of students and the number of computers, the proportion of the number of teachers and the number of computers, network coverage, network equip‐ ment, multimedia classrooms, and so on (Liu et al. 2014). In this research, we chose computer resource allocation in primary and middle schools, multimedia classrooms and digital resource of primary and middle schools as sub-level indicators for the school learning environment indicator (Table 2).

5-نتیجه گیری

افزایش مالکیت خودرو، رشد درامد و کاهش هزینه واقعی استفاده از خودرو به عنوان عوامل کلیدی موثر بر الگو های مسافرت شخصی در دنیا مطرح هستند. نتیجه این فرایند کاهش در تقاضا برای مسافرت و حمل و نقل عمومی و افزایش طول مسافرت است. این نه تنها در کشور های توسعه یافته بلکه در کشور های در حال توسعه دیده می شود. دو چرخه سواری و حمل و نقل عمومی که ازنظر زیست محیطی مطلوب است، توجه زیادی را به خود جلب کرده است. این مسئله منجر به استفاده از راهبرد های برنامه ریزی کاربری ارضی وحمل و نقل شده است. درک تفاوت ها در رفتار مسافرت و توجیه احتمالی این تفاوت ها می تواند به مدل سازی تقاضای مسافرت کمک کند و بایستی از سیاست های مطابق با نیاز های مختلف گروه های جمعیتی ارایه شود.

Abstract

The transport sector makes economic growth, contributes significantly to the functioning of the Slovak economy and individual regions and creating conditions for optimal economic and social potential. The transport sector is influenced by a wide range of external social and economic factors such as demographics, living standards of the population, urban planning, organization of production, structural changes in society and accessibility to transport infrastructure. The article aimed to examining if there is any correlation between demographic development of population and their travel behaviour. For this purpose were used methods of analysis, synthesis, analogy, comparison, data collection and processing and methods of mathematical statistics.

5- Conclusion

Rising car ownership, income growth and the declining real cost of using cars have been identified as the key factors that have shaped personal travel patterns around the world. The consequence has been a reduction in the demand for public transport modes and an increasing average trip length. This is not only an issue for the developed countries but also for fast developing countries. As a sustainable and environmentally sensitive alternative to car travel, public transport and cycling have received renewed attention in the world. This has led to a diverse range of transport and land use planning strategies supporting and promoting public transport and cycling. Understanding the differences in travel behaviour and the possible explanations for these differences can help travel demand modelling, and finding policies best suited to meeting the travel needs of all population groups.

چکیده

1. مقدمه

سوال مطرح شده در این مقاله این است که چگونه به سهولت قابلیت جایگزینی سوخت های فسیلی را با انرژی زمین گرمایی کم عمق برای رفع تقاضای گرمسازی فضا و آب گرم یک شهر ارزیابی نماییم. ما از یک روش جغرافیایی استفاده کرده ایم چرا که در مقیاس شهر، الگوی شهری به تقاضا و فضای موجود برای نصب مبدلهای حرارتی سوراخ گمانه زنی مربوط می شود. محاسبه پتانسیل روی یک قواره زمین براساس قواره زمین ارزیابی می شود و در این مقیاس خیلی زمانبر است و از اینرو یک روش GIS ساده (سیستم اطلاعات جغرافیایی) لازم است که اینکار را انجام دهد. ما از یک روش نمونه گیری برای تعیین اینکه چه تعداد سوراخ گمانه زنی را می توان در هر قواره زمین قرار داد استفاده می کنیم و تعیین می کنیم که چه درصدی از تقاضای انرژی را می توان انگاه با انرژی زمین گرمایی تامین نمود. بعد از آن تعیین می کنیم که کاهش پتانسیل در صدورات CO2 چقدر می شود اگر کلیه نصب های زمین گرمایی ممکنه در محل در ون شهر باشند. نتایج چنین تحلیلی را می توان به عنوان بوسیله برنامه ریزان شهری درون پروژه MUSIC هنگام ابداع برنامه های اصلی پایدارتری برای آن شهر مطابق با راهکار EU2020 استفاده نمود. داده های قابل دسترسی آسان در روش اجرا برای تضمین این امر استفاده می شود که فرایند در هر شهری از پروژه MUSIC قابل تکرار است و فراتر از دسترسی به داده های پایه یکسان می باشد.

Abstract

Due to the rapidly increasing percentage of the population living in urban centres, there is a need to focus on the energy demand of these cities and the use of renewable energies instead of fossil fuels. In this paper, we develop a spatial model to determine the potential per parcel for using shallow geothermal energy, for space heating and hot water. The method is based on the space heating and hot water energy demand of each building and the specific heat extraction potential of the subsurface per parcel. With this information, along with the available space per parcel for boreholes, the percentage of the energy demand that could be supplied by geothermal energy is calculated. The potential reduction in CO2 emissions should all possible geothermal energy be utilised, is also calculated. The method is applied to Ludwigsburg, Germany. It was found that CO2 emissions could potentially be reduced by 29.7% if all space heating and hot water requirements were provided by geothermal energy, which would contribute to the sustainability of a city. The method is simple in execution and could be applied to other cities as the data used should be readily available. Another advantage is the implementation into the web based Smart City Energy platform which allows interactive exploration of solutions across the city.

1. Introduction

By 2030 it is predicted that almost 60% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. In the European Union (EU) 74% of the total population lives in areas classified by national statistical offices as urban.2 With such growth in urban centres, sustainability has become a key concept when planning for the future. Since the Brundtland report [30] sustainability issues are on the political agenda, particularly CO2 emissions and the depletion of fossil fuels through rising fuel consumption of growing cities. The EU has recognised this need in their EU2020 growth strategy [12] which aims at reducing CO2 emissions by 20%, increasing the share of renewable energy sources in energy production to 20% and improving energy efficiency by 20% by the year 2020. Furthermore, a long-term target of the EU, to the year 2050, is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% as compared to 1990 levels. The need to approach urban planning with a view to not placing excess strain on land and resources is now widely accepted. However, in order for cities to ensure the sustainability of their energy production and use, renewable energy sources need to be included in urban growth plans. As a consequence, the European project MUSIC3 was launched to address CO2 reduction by renewable energy potentials within the five cities Aberdeen, Ghent, Ludwigsburg, Montreuil and Rotterdam. A web based decisions support system, the Smart City Energy Platform, was developed to enable multiple end users to explore sustainable solutions based on renewable energy potentials across the entire city at a high resolution.

It has become necessary to assess the energy demand at urban scale, and the potential for using different renewable energy sources to fulfil this demand. One should determine which renewable energy type, or mix, would be best suited to a city, as well as the impact this would have on reducing CO2 emissions. Shallow geothermal energy is one alternative that has received less focus than wind and solar energy potentials for cities. We address this gap with a particular focus on how the density and forms of urban pattern impact on energy potential and capacity to meet consumption demand.

Solar and wind energy have been the main focus of attention of studies into the potential for using these renewable energy sources. Geographical information systems (GIS) have been used for suitability mapping of land cover classes with high solar and wind energy potential [3,15,24,29]. Most studies are focused at a regional scale. Voivontas et al. [29], for example, calculated the water heating demand for a residential region, as well as the potential for using solar energy to meet these demands. Assessments of solar energy potential have also been performed at urban scale by Bergamasco and Asinari [4], who developed a simple methodology for assessing the roof-top potential for solar panels for the city of Turin, while Brito, Gomes, Santos, and Tenedo’rio [8] developed a procedure to estimate the photovoltaic potential of an urban region using LiDAR data and the Solar Analyst extension for ESRI’s ArcGIS. Mastrucci et al. (2015) [20] applied the Smart City Energy Platform for the combined assessment of housing electricity consumption and PV potential at the urban scale for the City of Rotterdam.

Compared to wind and sun, shallow geothermal energy is much less well studied despite it being a potentially good choice due to its unlimited availability. It is able to provide energy year round and is not dependent on outside factors such as cloud cover as for solar panels, or wind for wind turbines. The use of geothermal energy is becoming increasingly popular, with an estimated installed thermal power for direct utilisation in 2009 of 48,493 MWt, showing an annual growth from 2005 to 2010 of 11.4%. This equates to an energy saving of 250 million barrels of oil, annually, and a reduction in CO2 of 107 million tonnes [18]. The leading countries in installed units for direct use are the US, China, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands. However, there is slow development of this energy resource due to the high cost of installation and the current economic downturn hampering spending [19].

The question addressed in this paper is how to easily assess the potential for replacing fossil fuels with shallow geothermal energy in order to satisfy the space heating and hot water demand of a city. We use a geographical approach as, at city scale, the urban pattern is relevant to the demand and the space available for the installation of borehole heat exchangers. The potential calculation is assessed on a parcel by parcel basis, which is intensive at this scale and therefore a simple GIS (geographical information system) method was required to carry this out. We use a sampling method to determine how many boreholes could fit onto each parcel and determine what percentage of the energy demand can then be supplied by geothermal energy. Following this, we determine the potential reduction in CO2 emissions if all possible geothermal installations are put in place within the city. The outcomes of such an analysis can be used by urban planners within the MUSIC project when developing more sustainable master plans for the city, in accordance with the EU2020 strategy. Easily obtainable data have been used in the methodology to ensure that the process is replicable in any city of the MUSIC project and beyond with access to the same basic data.

Due to the readily available dataset, the city of Ludwigsburg was used as a case study. The developed methodology will be the basis for a web based online calculator within the Smart City Energy Platform4 which is based on the software framework iGUESS [1]. The article is organised as follows. In Section 2, we introduce shallow geothermal energy technology and review the literature on the assessment of its potential as a renewable energy source. In Section 3, we introduce the data and the case study area of Ludwigsburg. Following this, we present a sequence of computational methods, namely the calculation of energy demand, the geothermal potential and the percentage of the energy demand satisfied by geothermal energy at parcel level. We then calculate the potential reduction in CO2 emissions at city scale. In Section 4, we present the results for each submodel. In Section 5, we conclude that the methodology for determining the geothermal potential of a city is simple and effective and that a significant reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved through using geothermal energy for space heating and hot water. We also conclude that residential dwellings are best suited to this type of renewable energy as the energy demand is relatively low and there is enough space available for the installation of a borehole on the parcel to cover this demand. This questions the design of sustainable residential neighbourhoods in terms of compactness or density planning e in certain cases, where shallow geothermal energy can be utilised, a less dense urban pattern would be considered more sustainable..

Abstract

Geographic information systems can be defined as a intelligent tool, to which it relates techniques for the implementation of processes such as the introduction, recording, storage, handling, processing and generation of spatial data. Use of GIS in urban planning helps and guides planners for an orderly development of settlements and infrastructure facilities within and outside urban areas. Continued growth of the population in urban centers generates the need for expansion of urban space, for its planning in terms of physical and social infrastructures in the service of the community, based on the principles of sustainable development. In addition urbanization is accompanied with numerous structural transformations and functional cities, which should be evaluated in spatial context, to be managed and planned according to the principles of sustainable development. Urban planning connects directly with land use and design of the urban environment, including physical and social infrastructure in service of the urban community, constituting a challenge to global levels. Use of GIS in this field is a different approach regarding the space, its development and design, analysis and modeling of various processes occurring in it, as well as interconnections between these processes or developments in space.

3-4- GIS as a decision-making system

GIS enables us to see, to understand , to interpret and visualize data in different forms, where we can find various spatial correlations, patterns, and trends in the form of maps , atatisical reports and charts, etc. In this context it is an important decision-making tool in various fields. GIS is able to design possible alternatives and future development of the territory, of population, of economy development etc . Applications of GIS in support decision making allow: – designing different alternatives of actions in the territory, through the examination of the data with different thematic content, which are integrated with each other and are related to the spatial context. – linking data with different thematic patterns in territory development models – designing projections of triad population/area/economy in the future – designing of building models of the urban territory, land-use models, evaluation and expertise models of the territory, offering quality, efficient , fast and accurate products that facilitate the decision making process

The advent of geolocated ICT technologies opens the possibility of exploring how people use space in cities, bringing an important new tool for urban scientists and planners, especially for regions where data is scarce or not available. Here we apply a functional network approach to determine land use patterns from mobile phone records. The versatility of the method allows us to run a systematic comparison between Spanish cities of various sizes. The method detects four major land use types that correspond to different temporal patterns. The proportion of these types, their spatial organization and scaling show a strong similarity between all cities that breaks down at a very local scale, where land use mixing is specific to each urban area. Finally, we introduce a model inspired by Schelling’s segregation, able to explain and reproduce these results with simple interaction rules between different land uses.

INTRODUCTION

Land use patterns appear as a natural result of citizens’ and planners’ interaction with the urban space. However, in a feedback loop, they also play a major role in the experience that residents and visitors have of a city [1]. Land use patterns have an effect on the liveability of neighborhoods and even on the health of the local residents [2]. On the other hand, land use and transportation display a well-established relation [3–6]. Transport demand depends on the location of residence and business areas, while the presence of new transport lines or facilities such as metro stations can substantially modify the land use mixing in a given area of the city. These ideas lie behind the development of the so-called Land Use Transport Interaction (LUTI) models [7, 8], which are commonly employed in transport planning around the globe [9].

چکیده

Abstract

Longitudinal analysis is rarely leveraged in the field of geography to understand neighbourhood change despite many studies documenting important transformations within metropolitan areas (e.g. gentrification, impoverishment of inner suburbs, etc.). This paper aims to identify and model trajectories of neighbourhood poverty in Montreal over five consecutive census years (1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006), using Latent Class Growth Modelling. Neighbourhoods are classified in eight groups, identifying those with stable, increasing or declining trajectories of poverty. Multinomial logistic regression analysis shows that the proportion of residents with low levels of education, unemployment rate, proportion of recent immigrants and the proportion of renters measured at the beginning of the period (1986) are important predictors of poverty trajectories, as are variations throughout the study period (1986–2006) in the proportions of recent immigrants and of residents with low levels of education.

Introduction

Globalization, economic restructuring, demographic shifts, as well as changes in government policies have modified the social divisions of cities (Jargowsky, 2003; Van Kempen & Murie, 2009; Walk, 2001), notably the spatial distribution of low-income populations within metropolitan areas. As a result, the geography of poverty and social deprivation is now receiving growing attention in North America as well as in Europe (Cooke & Marchant, 2006; Heisz & McLeod, 2004; Kearns & Parkinson, 2001; Kitchen & Williams, 2009; Lupton & Power, 2004; Madden, 2003a, 2003b). To date, most of the empirical work on neighbourhood change has examined transformations between two points in time (Kitchen & Williams, 2009; Mikelbank, 2006; Reibel & Regelson, 2011; Vicino, 2008). With the exception of the recent work of Mikelbank (2011) on the ClevelandeAkron metropolitan area, few studies have analyzed trajectories with precision i.e. they have not investigated changes in the socioeconomic characteristics of neighbourhood populations over more than two points in time.

Conclusion

Our results show that radical changes in the geography of poverty are an exception in the Montreal CMA. Poverty zones evolved according to their initial characteristics and changes were minor over time, except for CTs in the gentrification trajectory where changes in poverty levels were more marked. From 1986 onward, we observed the presence of weak and very weak concentrations of low-income populations in the older suburbs, as indicated by LQ values greater than one. This illustrates that the impoverishment process was already underway in these CTs and that it slightly increased during the period of study (these CTs were characterized by trajectories of increasing poverty). Although census tracts in trajectories F and G were characterized by low LQ values, indicating lower poverty in these neighbourhoods than across the Montreal CMA, poor populations were nonetheless present within these territories. As documented in past studies (Séguin, 1998; Séguin & Germain, 2000), this supports the phenomenon of a relative social mix in Montreal neighbourhoods, even in wealthier areas.
