INTRODUCTION

One of the most recognized terms in today’s electricitymarket is deregulation. To realize the potential of distributiongeneration, generation and load must be taken as a subsystem. This system may use any combination of generation, load andstorage technologies and can operate in grid connected mode orautonomous mode. Some examples of micro power system ormicrogrid are solar-battery serving a remote load, wind-dieselsystem serving an isolated village, a grid connected natural gasmicroturbine providing heat to a factory. Micropower systemconsists of electric and thermal load, and any combination ofphotovoltaic modules (PV), wind turbine, small hydro, biomasspower generation, microturbines, fuel cells, reciprocatingengine generators, batteries and hydrogen storage. The analysisand design of micropower system is challenging due to largenumber of design options and uncertainty in key parameterssuch as load size and future fuel price. Renewable energysources add further complexity because the output may beintermittent, seasonal and nondispatchable and the availability isuncertain. This work is a technical and economic feasibilitystudy of a hybrid generating system, composed of wind, dieseland grid resources feeding a customer with high reliabilityrequirements of electric supply. Penetration of distributedgeneration across the country has yet not reached the significantlevels. These emerging technologies have lower emission andpotential to have lower cost. A better way to realize the potential of distributed generation is to take a system approachwhere load and generation acts as a subsystem called“microgrid”. This is a decentralized and bidirectional patternpermits electricity import from the grid and electricity export tothe grid. A plant that produces electricity less than 500 kWcomes under micro generation technologies. Microgrid sourcescan produce electrical energy and thermal energy both. Hence, the penetration of distributed energy resources both at lowvoltages and medium voltages (LV and MV) in utility anddownstream networks have been increased in developedcountries like USA, Canada, Japan.II. SYSTEM SCHEMATIC AND COMPONENTSThe ability to generate electricity is a building block ofmodern society. The utilization of wind turbines to produceelectricity is practiced for over hundred years. Similarly, dieselengines have been a technology to produce energy since 1940s.However, the field of engineering concerned with the couplingof PV-Wind-Diesel systems have just begun recently. Thefollowing schematic represents basic PV-Wind-Diesel hybridsystem. Hybrid power system incorporates more than one pieceof equipment for electricity production as well as storage, power conditioning components and system controls. A. Wind ResourceUtilizing wind mills for various reasons is a practice forseveral years. Now many nations recognize the shortage offossil fuels and importance of wind energy. The wind energyhas re-emerged as an important source of sustainable energyresource worldwide. The energy available in the wind dependson the density and velocity. The density changes with thetemperature and pressure. The need to integrate the renewableenergy like wind into power system is to make it possible tominimize the environmental impact on conventional plant.Today more than 28,000 wind generating turbines are operatingsuccessfully all over the world. As the ratio of installed windcapacity to the system load increases, the required equipmentneeded to maintain a stable AC grid increases, forcing anoptimum amount of wind power in a given system. So thedesign of individual components. must be sized properly. In thismodeling, 0.4 kW DC rated power is used for the wind turbine. The power curve and cost curve for wind turbine is shown infigures2and3respectively.
