مقدمه

Introduction

Since the 1970s, sport has assumed an ever-increasing role within the globalization of business and public events with sports participants, capital, and labor moving around the world. With global sport events like the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup of soccer or the Olympic Games capturing world-wide audiences, sports events have become highly sought-after commodities. Professional sports in developed economies are viewed as a pathway out of poverty; some examples are soccer players in Africa and Latin America or runners from Africa and the Caribbean. Since the 1990s, there has been a dramatic increase in international athletes coming to the United States (U.S.) to participate in intercollegiate athletics in exchange for a subsidized university education. Many countries have or are developing sport tourism and event-driven economies in order to increase the influx of hard currency (Nauright, 2015). However, in the process of global sport and event development, many countries are left behind without the necessary infrastructure or visibility to compete successfully. In countries such as South Africa, regions able to host large-scale events may experience an influx of revenue; yet, most of that does not reach peripheral areas of the country (Giampiccoli & Nauright, 2017).

The process of showcasing a culture in the lead-up to a sport event and during the event itself has had to focus on ready-made markets, thus reinforcing stereotypes about a place and its people that may or may not be beneficial. The sport-media-tourism complex (Nauright, 2004, 2015) driving global sport is multifaceted, uneven, but becoming more universal as cities such as Kazan, Almaty, Beijing, Seoul, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and others seek to host major global events. Soccer leagues in South Africa, South Korea, Japan, and most significantly, China, which are all minor players in the latter 20th century, are net importers of soccer talents from other countries; for example, the Chinese Super League is challenging the top European leagues and teams for the best players from around the world. During the 1980s and 1990s, this process intensified as governments increasingly diverted large sums of money into national sporting programs aimed at succeeding on the international stage.

چکیده

آموزش مدیریت ورزش به طور روزافزون در برگیرنده موقعیت هایی برای تفکر انتقادی در محیط های رسمی و غیر رسمی  برای افزایش میزان اشتغال فارغ التحصیلان می باشد. این تحقیق ، دلایل احتمالی عدم ارتباط بین مهارت های مورد نیازکارکنان در صنعت ورزش و مهارت هایی که فارغ التحصیلان توسط مدیران آموخته اند را بررسی می کند. نتایج تحقیق بیان می کند که تفکر انتقادی در حوزه آموزش مدیریت ورزش فرد محور است و در آن حوزه های اجتماعی و سایر ویژگی های محیطی ( مثل فرهنگ سازمانی ) صنعت ورزش نادیده گرفته شده اند. این تحقیق کارایی تفکر انتقادی را در سه حوزه فردی ( تجربه گرایی – درخواست بازخورد – و آگاهی شغلی ) و سه حوزه اجتماعی ( تفکرات گروهی چالش برانگیز – آزادی در قابل اشتباهات و اشتراک گذاری نظریات ) مطرح می سازد. درقسمت نتیجه گیری نیز پیشنهاداتی برای تحقیقات آینده و جهت گیری تحصیلات عالی با ترکیب محیط های یادگیری رسمی و غیر رسمی جهت ارتقای جنبه های اجتماعی و تفکر انتقادی در برنامه درسی مدیریت ورزشی آورده شده است.

تحقیقات آینده 

با اشاره به وجود شواهد زیاد در مورد مزایای توسعه ابعاد اجتماعی تفکر انتقادی، و بر اساس تحلیل انجام شده در این تحقیق، مزایای این پیشرفت ها مسیر را برای تحقیقات آینده هموار می سازند و امکان بررسی طراحی برنامه های درسی و تغییر در جهت گیری های آموزش عالی را فراهم می آورد و فارغ التحصیلان آموزش مدیریت ورزش را قادر می سازد تا انتقادی تر باشند و میزان اشتغال را افزایش دهند. بخصوص اینکه،تحقیقات آینده باید چشم اندازها- تجارب و توانایی های تفکر انتقادی منعکس کننده محیط های WIL را بررسی کنند و شیوه های افزایش ارزش سازمان های میزبان در طولWILرا مورد بررسی قرار دهند. این اطلاعات می توانند طراحی برنامه های درسی را آگاهانه کنند و کسب تجربه مرتبط با ارتقای ابعاد اجتماعی تفکر انتقادی را تسهیل کنند. همچنین، تحقیقات آینده در مورد نقش، ارزش و پیشرفت آموزش مدیریت ورزش باید چشم اندازهای ناظران ، محصلان و سازمان های میزبانWIL را در بربگیرند. در نظر گرفتن چشم اندازهای تمام سهامداران منجر به کسب اطلاعات بیشتر در مورد مسائل مربوط به استفاده از SKA در موقعیت های سازمانی و توسط دانشجویان رشته مدیریت می شود.

Abstract

Sport management education is increasingly including opportunities for critical reflection in both formal and informal learning environments to improve graduate employability. This paper outlines potential reasons why there is disconnect between the skills employers want in the sport industry and the skills that sport management programmes equip graduates with. The findings of this review suggest that critical reflection in tertiary sport management education is individually oriented, and neglects the social dimensions and other contextual aspects (e.g. organizational culture) of the sport industry. This paper proposes an operationalization of critical reflection into three individual dimensions (experimentation, asking for feedback, and career awareness) and three social dimensions (challenging group-think, openness about mistakes, and sharing ideas). The paper concludes with suggestions for further research and higher education policy direction that combines formal and informal learning environments in enhancing the social aspects of critical reflection in sport management curricula.

Future research and conclusion

Given the wealth of evidence of the benefits of developing the social dimensions of critical reflection, and based on the analysis in this paper, these development benefits offer directions for future research and investigations into the ways that curriculum design and changes to higher education policy direction can enable sport management graduates to become more critically reflective, thereby increasing their employability. Specifically, further research should investigate students’ views, experiences, and abilities to critically reflect within WIL environments and it should investigate the ways in which students can add value to the host organizations during WIL. This information could inform curriculum design to foster experiences that facilitate the development of the social dimensions of critical reflection. Further to this, future research on the role, value and advancement of critical reflection in sport management education should be inclusive of the perspectives of WIL supervisors, educators, and host organizations. Including the views of all stakeholders would result in greater insights on issues surrounding the application of SKAs in organizational settings by sport management students.

Abstract

In the last few years there has been a significant increase in the number and scope of social science research into doping in sport. However, despite this apparent progress, the field remains a disparate body of work and lacks both direction and leadership. Whilst sport management is a discipline that is well suited to provide such leadership, scholarly research into this controversial topic has not been published widely in sport management journals. This special issue redresses this gap by bringing together a range of scholarly articles that represent a variety of perspectives by authors from North America, Europe and Australia. The issues and challenges covered are varied, but each paper brings a common theme: the implications for the management of doping in sport. The six papers in this Special Issue of Sport Management Review are a significant addition to the slowly growing body of sport management scholarly work on doping in sport. It is hoped that future research will be prompted with this Special Issue and the discipline of sport management will recognize and respond to the challenges presented by doping.

1. Introduction

In recent times doping scandals have tarnished a number of sports. These incidents pose threats to the integrity of sport, both nationally and on a global scale. In response, sporting organizations and governments have introduced legislation and accompanying sanctions to deter the use of both performance enhancing and other illicit (non-performance enhancing) drugs. However, it could be argued that effective strategies for combating doping in sport are hindered by a lack of organizational commitment, varying opinions on how the problem should be managed and a lack of reliable information and empirical data to formulate and implement appropriate doping policy.

Abstract

This case study is written for instructors of sport management courses focused on ethics and integrity-related issues in team environments. The case highlights the real world example of the University of Waterloo Warriors varsity football that, in 2010, experienced the most significant doping scandal in Canadian university sports history, with a total of nine anti-doping rule violations asserted through the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. This case study also incorporates the findings of an independent review of the Waterloo football program in relation to the use of banned substances, and includes first-hand accounts from Bob Copeland who was the acting director of athletics. These findings are then interpreted in the context of relevant theory related to performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) use. Along with the findings of this review, which included interviews with athletes, coaches, and administrators, the case study provides important insights into ethical decision making processes and leadership structures in a team sport environment. Particular emphasis is placed on the role that individual cognitive antecedents and contextual organizational factors (i.e., policies, leadership, ethical climate, and infrastructure) play in ethical decision-making processes.

Sample assignments for this course might include:

(1) Students could be asked to write specific policies and ethical principles designed to help facilitate an ethical culture in a team sports environment. For example, what policies might help facilitate a supportive environment for all players on the team to raise concerns about suspected PEDs use? (2) Students could be asked to develop an inventory of organizations that promote integrity, ethics, and values in sport (e.g., truesport.org). From this inventory, students could be asked to select one of these organizations and make a presentation to the class about the specific messages, strategies, and programs promoted by the organization. (3) Leadership is an important component in organizational behavior, as well as a construct that was examined in this case. Students could be asked to complete a two-part assignment as follows: (1) Provide a literature review of organizational behavior theory related to leadership concepts, with emphasis on the role and relationship of coaches and team captains; (2) Develop an organizational structure for the leadership of a team sport, with clearly defined roles and expectations of coaches and team captains. For example, this might include criteria for selecting captains, communication structures (between coaches and captains, and between captains and players), and accountability frameworks for players on the team.
