Introduction

In power systems analysis, it is preferred touse completely analytical and deterministicmethods anywhere possible; that is, theequations describing system models weresolved either explicitly or numerically. Inorder to finding these solutions we often hadto make simplifying assumptions andapproximations, alluding at the same time tothe possibility of obtaining more accurateresults with the help of simulation methods. In fact, simulation methods can often be theonly means of obtaining the solution to thesystem model, especially when the systemsstudied is large and complex or when theeffects of certain sequences of events are of aparticular interest or when the probabilitydistributions, rather than only the means andvariances, are required.Monte Carlo simulation as a numericalsimulation is a process of selecting a set ofvalues of system parameters and obtaining asolution of the system model for a selectedset. By repeating the simulation process fordifferent sets of system parameters, different sample solutions are obtained. The keyactivity in the Monte Carlo simulation processis the selection of system parameters to obtainsample solutions; which is applied toproblems involving random variables withknown, modeled or assumed probabilitydistributions. A sample from a Monte Carlosimulation is similar to a sample ofexperimental observations. Therefore, theresults of these studies, as modeled samples, can then be used to study mathematicalmodels of real-world systems, or for statisticalstudies.Systematic generation of the appropriatevalues of the random variables in accordancewith the respective prescribed probabilitydistribution is accomplished by firstgenerating a uniformly distributed randomnumber between 0 and 1 and then, throughappropriate transformations, obtaining thecorresponding random number with thespecified probability distribution. However one of the main difficulties associated withthe application of the analytical methods inprobabilistic power system studies is that therandom variables are often not independentand that the joint probability distributionfunctions must be used. This introduces anadditional difficulty in the already complexproblems, and therefore the majority ofanalytical approaches assume independenceof the random variables or somehowinaccurate dependencies through thecorrelations only. One of the main applications of copulas is inthe Monte Carlo studies where a multivariatedependency structure exists [1]. Using ofcopulas fits the stochastic modeling ofdependant chaotic variables and time series inpower systems well. They can efficiently usedto produce non-conventional multivariatedistributions for Monte Carlo studies. On theother hand, the use of copulas for modelingpurposes includes two straightforward steps. The first step is modeling the marginaldistributions along with their correlation matrix and the second consists in fitting theproper copula. It should be mentioned that it is an obscure task to find a multivariatedistribution and fit it to our data. The use ofcopulas is practical as some good softwarepackages have already provided its completeimplementation (such as [2], [3]).
