Introduction

This paper examines the development ofpositive accounting theory (hereinafter PAT)and compares it with three standard accountsof science. There is some confusion aboutwhat PAT is. If the definition of accountingtheory (i.e., accounting theory seeks toexplain and predict accounting and auditingpractice) given in Watts and Zimmerman’s(W & Z) 1986 book is taken to mean PAT,studies of accounting choices and auditingpractices constitute PAT. This theory is discussed in Chapters 8-14 of W & Z(1986). At the same time, W & Z (1986: 1)also say that their book seeks to explain theeconomics-based empirical literature inaccounting and their book describes, inaddition to accounting choice studies, capitalmarket-based accounting research. W & Z(1986: 37) further say that Ball and Brown’s1968 paper initially popularized positiveresearch in accounting. This seems tosuggest that PAT includes both capitalmarket-based accounting research andresearch in accounting choices. This papertakes PAT to include both researchprograms. This usage is consistent with W &Z’s (1986: 8) assertion that they use the term“positive” to differentiate it from“prescriptive”.PAT has been one of the most influentialaccounting research programs during the lastfour decades. It has spawned a lot ofempirical research on the associationbetween accounting numbers and stockprices and returns, and determinants ofaccounting choices by management. It hasspawned a number of accounting journals, among which the Journal of Accounting andEconomics is the most prominent. Brinn etal. (1996), in a survey of UK academics’perceptions of journal quality, found that thetop four accounting journals are: Journal ofAccounting and Economics, Journal ofAccounting Research, the AccountingReview, and Accounting, Organizations andSociety. Articles published in the top threejournals are predominantly in the positivetradition. The sheer number of articles inthese two paradigms published in majoraccounting journals and the dominance ofPAT in PhD programs in U. S. and otheruniversities testify to the dominant positionof PAT. In fact, the emergence of empiricalaccounting research as the dominantresearch approach can be attributed to PAT.Thus, judged by the number of researcharticles, the number and dominance of thejournals it spawned, and the dominance of PAT in doctoral programs, PAT has beenimmensely influential. One important comparison to which W &Z (1986: Chapter One) have appealed tolegitimize and promote PAT is the samenessof their view of theory and that in science. They have cited various philosophy ofscience authors to assert that their view oftheory is the same as that in science and tojustify their method and to discredit, to acertain extent, normative theory. Thus, giventhat PAT has been here for around fourdecades, it is important to examine how faraccounting could be studied in the mould ofnatural sciences and what were the limits. Itis also important to revisit themethodological positions of PAT. It wouldbe interesting to see how the developmentpattern of PAT compares with accounts ofscience to which W & Z appealed tolegitimize and promote their theory. This isbecause such a comparison will enhance ourunderstanding of how PAT progressed andwhat are the methodological gaps thatremain.
